Why do we do responsive readings?

What does courage actually look like in everyday life?

05/11/2026

In a world that tells us to keep pushing, producing and proving ourselves God still whispers an ancient invitation: “Come away and rest awhile.” (Mark 6:31)
Even Jesus stepped away from the crowds. Even Jesus rested.
Rest is not laziness. Rest is not weakness. Rest is trust.
When we pause, breathe, pray, nap, laugh or simply sit in silence we remember that the world keeps turning because God is God. Not because we never stop moving.
Maybe today your soul needs permission to slow down. Maybe holiness looks less like striving and more like receiving grace.
Take a breath. Drink some water. Step outside. Say a prayer. Let yourself rest.
God meets us there too.

Daily Devotional: Seeking the Root
Howard Thurman once prayed:
“Whatever disaffection there is between me and those who are or have been very close to me—I would seek the root cause… and with the illumination of Your mind, O God, to understand it.”
That’s a hard prayer. Because it asks us not just to notice the distance between us and others but to look within.
In Psalm 139, we hear a similar cry: “Search me, O God, and know my heart… see if there is any wicked way in me.”
It’s easier to name what they did. Harder to ask what might be broken, wounded or misunderstood in us.
But healing doesn’t come from winning arguments. It comes from understanding hearts, our own and each other’s.
Disconnection often has deeper roots than we can see.
God’s Spirit doesn’t just point fingers. It brings light.
So today instead of rehearsing the hurt try this: “God, show me what I cannot see. Help me understand before I react.”
Prayer:
God of truth and grace, shine your light into my relationships. Where there is distance reveal the deeper story. Where there is hurt grow understanding. Begin with me. Amen.

Whoever you are and wherever you are on the journey you are welcome here.
Join us this Sunday as we celebrate the love, strength, compassion , and grace that reflect the heart of God in so many women’s lives.

Daily Devotional: The Desire That Pleases God
The monk Thomas Merton once prayed:
“I do not see the road ahead of me… nor do I really know myself… But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you.”
There’s something deeply freeing in that.
We often feel pressure to get it right. To perfectly understand God’s will, to make the flawless decision, to never misstep. But faith isn’t about perfect clarity. It’s about faithful desire.
In 1 Samuel, we’re reminded: “The Lord does not see as mortals see… the Lord looks on the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)
God sees what others cannot. God sees the longing behind your prayers. God sees the quiet hope that says, “I want to follow you.”
Even when we’re unsure, even when we get it wrong, that desire matters.
You may not always know the way.
But if your heart is turned toward God you are not far off.
Prayer:
God of grace, when I feel uncertain or unsure remind me that you see my heart. Shape my desires to reflect your love, and guide me, even when I cannot see the road ahead. Amen.

Some days life feels steady. Other days it feels like everything is shifting beneath our feet. Plans change. Hearts ache. Anxiety rises. Faith can even feel fragile.
But hear this good news. You are still held.
Held by the God who walks through storms, sits beside us in grief and never lets go. Even when life feels uncertain. In the Wesleyan tradition we believe grace is always at work before we even notice it. God’s love does not disappear when our confidence does.
Isaiah 41:10 reminds us “Do not fear, for I am with you… I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
You may not know what tomorrow brings but you do not face tomorrow alone.
Take a deep breath today. Rest for a moment in this truth. God is still present. God is still faithful. And you are still held.

Daily Devotional: Drop the Mask
“Christ can save the sinner you are, but not the saint you pretend to be.”
— Anthony Bloom
There’s a quiet temptation in the life of faith to look the part. To say the right words. To appear like we have it all together.
But Jesus never asked for perfection. He asked for honesty.
In Luke Jesus tells of a Pharisee and a tax collector praying. One lists his righteousness; the other simply says, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” And it’s the honest prayer, the vulnerable one, that God receives (Luke 18:9–14).
God can work with truth. God can heal what is real. But pretending? That keeps grace at arm’s length.
You don’t have to impress God.
You don’t have to hide from God.
You only have to come as you are.
Because the good news is this. Christ doesn’t save the version of you that performs. He saves the version of you that surrenders.
Prayer:
Gracious God, strip away the masks I wear. Give me the courage to come before you as I truly am trusting that your grace is enough. Amen.

Daily Devotional: Rooted and Grounded in Love
In Ephesians 3:17–18 Paul offers this beautiful prayer: “…that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love… and have the power to comprehend… the breadth and length and height and depth…”
Paul doesn’t just want us to know about love. He wants us to be anchored in it.
Like roots that go deep into the soil God’s love holds us steady when life feels uncertain. Like a foundation beneath a house it gives strength when everything else shakes.
And yet this love is bigger than we can fully grasp. It stretches wider than our divisions, deeper than our wounds, higher than our expectations.
As United Methodists we believe grace is always at work. Before us, within us, and through us. This love is not something we earn. It’s something we grow into day by day.
You are already planted in God’s love.
The journey is learning just how deep those roots go.
Prayer:
God of limitless love, root me deeply in your grace. Help me to live grounded in your love and open my heart to its fullness beyond what I can see or understand. Amen.
