“Pure Christianity, instead of being shaped by its culture, actually stands in sharp opposition to it.” - A.W. Tozer

Ran across this song from 1985. This has always been one of my favorite songs. The challenge of the chorus is real.

A Living Fire
Glen Allen Green

Is it just me, or have you felt
A bitter wind against your soul
I do believe the world
Grows colder everyday
For the hearts of men are frozen
By a fear they can't control
Of a world without tomorrow
Of a future filled with sorrow
How they need to see
Beyond the icy grave
To the One who saves

Like a candle
That burns away the darkness
Like the lightning
That flashes 'cross the sky
May my life torch their hearts
And melt the hardness
And burn for You
Revealing You a living fire

I love You, Lord
Oh, your mercy never fails me
And all my days, I've been
held in your hands
From the moment that I wake up
Until I lay my head
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God

And all my life you have been faithful
And all my life you have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God

I love your voice
You have led me through the fire
In my darkest night
You are close like no other
I've known you as a Father
I've known you as a Friend
And I have lived in the goodness of God

And all my life you have been faithful
And all my life you have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love

Proverbs 19:18 says: Where there is no vision, the people perish. Another translation says where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint.

This world has a serious lack of vision. It may not be for lack of looking, but more an issue of where people are looking. God has been systematically removed from society, and, sadly, many churches have followed in an attempt to be more “welcoming.” We have turned away from the vision, the guidance, the revelation of God, and turned, instead, to ourselves as sources of wisdom, understanding, and guidance in the truth. With this has come the loss of restraint. There is no limit because there is no standard - no vision.

I love the words to this old Irish prayer. It is familiar to many as translated in 1905 and put to varied versions of an Irish folk song.

Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best thought, by day or by night
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light

Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son
Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise
Thou mine inheritance, now and always
Thou and Thou only first in my heart
High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art

High King of heaven, my victory won
May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's sun
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
Still be my vision, O ruler of all

Some advice for 2024:
Act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.

Micah 6:8

Christmas is about the greatest example of unconditional love that has ever existed. Jesus came to take our rags of rebellion on himself and, in return, give us his robe of righteousness.

This is not your typical Christmas song, but I think it sums up the purpose of Christmas about as well as it can be done.

The Robe
by Wes King

Anyone whose heart is cold and lonely
Anyone who can't believe
Anyone whose hands are worn and empty
Come as you are

Anyone whose feet are tired of walking
And even lost their will to run
There is a place of rest
for your aching soul
Come as you are

For the robe is of God
That will clothe your nakedness
And the robe is His grace
It's all you need
Come as you are

Anyone who feels that they're unworthy
Anyone who’s just afraid
Come sinner, come and receive His mercy
Come as you are

For the robe is of God
That will clothe your nakedness
And the robe is His grace
It's all you need
Come as you are
