… and Uncle Joe just sat right up!!
Now, let's talk about the absolute BEST miracle that happened right at the death of Jesus on the cross... what I like to call the "Zombie Saints"
We find this in only one gospel, in Matthew 27:50-53
“And Jesus cried out again… and yielded up His spirit.
And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two… the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many.”
So what is actually happening here? When Jesus finally died, there was an earthquake and apparently a rush of energy that literally brought people back to life who were in their tombs. They would have been people who had died fairly recently before that (possibly up to within a year). But one funny thing to point out, is that it says that I guess they just waited until He was resurrected three days later to actually come out of them lol....
So imagine this, you go to uncle Joe's funeral and then this carpenter you heard about gets crucified and when He actually dies and resurrects, uncle Joe comes back to the house to talk to you and lives out the rest of his second life given to him because he came back to life after that one guy everyone was talking about was crucified. Imagine what a powerful moment that would be!
This is one you most likely won't hear on Sunday unfortunately, and I think it's again just because it's such a weird part of this story, but it is my absolute FAVORITE miracle of the crucifixion/resurrection story.
So you want to know why Jesus was talked about so much and why we have so many ancient accounts of Him outside of the Bible? Because He IS God and the entire area was uprooted as a result of the crucifixion and resurrection.
The Zombie Saints (awesome metal band name) would have played a large part in that and most certainly primed the people in Jerusalem die what would be coming in just about a little over a month after the resurrection. The beginning of the church and the spread of Christianity
