Rejoice, St. Bartholomew, it is our patronal feast!
Today the whole Church keeps the feast of the apostle whose name we carry, and in today's first reading John sees that name among the foundations of the heavenly Jerusalem. What a day to celebrate.
Scripture gives him almost no words, but it gives us his character. Philip said, come and see. He came, gladly. And the Lord looked at him and said, here is a true Israelite, there is no duplicity in him.
Not a performer. A witness who showed up with his whole heart and stayed.
And what a joy that this is what our parish is made of. The sacristans and the lectors, the ushers and the catechists, the ones who carry communion to the homebound, the ones who kneel here on a Tuesday for someone who will never know it.
Living stones, all of you, raised on the foundation the apostles laid. Happy feast day, and may it be a glad one.
Saint Bartholomew, apostle and martyr, pray for us. ๐๏ธ
