May 21 - St. Christopher Magallanes and Companions
Today we remember St. Cristóbal Magallanes and his 24 companions remained faithful to Christ and were martyred during the two decades surrounding the Cristero Wars of Mexico. Under the persecution of Mexico’s anti-Catholic President Plutarco Calles, it’s estimated that anywhere from 90,000 to 250,000 people were killed. Seminaries, schools, and churches were closed, and people were regularly arrested and executed without trial.
St. Cristóbal, raised a poor and humble farmer and shepherd, entered the seminary to become a Catholic priest at age 19. When the government closed the main seminary in Guadalajara, Cristóbal opened a secret seminary at his parish. Within a year, the clandestine school had grown to 17 students.
As anti-Catholic persecution intensified, the seminarians and priests were often forced to flee into the mountains and hide in private homes to evade government soldiers.
St. Cristobal was arrested on May 21, 1927, while traveling to celebrate Mass, on the false accusation of supporting a violent rebellion. He wsa executed four days later by firing squad, without a trial, on May 25, 1927, in Colotitlán, standing next to a fellow priest, Fr. Agustín Caloca.
His final words were, ”I am innocent and I die innocent; I forgive the authors of my death from my heart and I ask God that my blood would serve to bring peace to divided Mexicans.”
In troubling times, we must consider what we are willing to endure in support of our faith. Are we willing to be faithful unto death, like the Cristero martyrs? Are we willing to suffer persecution in more subtle ways that challenge us via social pressures or reputation? May the Holy Spirit fortify us to hold fast to Jesus in every situation, strengthened by the example of the martyrs who forgave even their ex*****oners.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
St. Christopher Magallanes and Companions, pray for us!
