Sunday, June 7: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Jesus said to the Jewish crowds: "I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."

The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you." John 6:51-53

May 31 - The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

"God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God." John 3:16-18

God crafted and put into action a plan of salvation for all of mankind. But just as He created us with free will to choose to obey to our benefit or to disobey to our peril... our salvation also lies in our own choice. God does not "send people to hell." Instead, mankind is allowed to choose his or her own path after this world: accept His free gift of salvation, or reject Him and face eternal separation from His presence.

1 Timothy 2:3-7 tells us that God our Savior "wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth." The passage then goes on to tie into today's solemnity by explaining that "there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people."

Today we celebrate the foundational mystery that there is One God existing in three co-equal, co-eternal Divine Persons — the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit — working together to repair the great divide created between us and God, created by the first sin in the garden. May we look to all Three Persons for the specific guidance and care that each uniquely offers us in our spiritual journey back home.

Today we remember the day a 19 year old French girl clutched a cross to her chest and allowed herself to be burned at the stake rather than deny her faith and her private revelations from the saints. Though she simply referred to herself as “Jehanne la Pucelle” (Joan the Maiden), St. Joan of Arc is today one of the most widely known stories of unexpected and heroic bravery.

At just 17 years old, Joan came to Charles VII of France, saying she was being guided by visions from St. Michael, St. Margaret, and St. Catherine to help him save France from English domination. Convinced of her purity and devotion, Charles sent Joan to the besieged city of Orléans. Her arrival brought hope to a demoralized French army and, nine days later, the English abandoned the siege.

Joan played a decisive role advising on subsequent victories, and Charles was soon crowned King of France with Joan at his side. Sadly, subsequent missteps in battle began to erode the French faith in Joan, and she was eventually captured and handed over to the English, who put her on trial for heresy. Though there are many documented examples of problems with the trial and with how she was treated while imprisoned, Joan was eventually declared guilty.

The morning of her ex*****on, Joan was allowed to receive the Sacraments despite the rule that they be denied to heretics. Joan then asked to view a cross as she died, and was given one by an English soldier made from a stick, which she kissed and placed next to her chest. A crucifix was fetched from a nearby church which she embraced before her hands were bound. It was held before her eyes during her ex*****on.

A retrial ordered by Pope Callixtus III completely cleared Joan’s name of heresy and the Church now recognizes her as a martyr since she chose to die rather than abandon her faith and her divine visions.

As with so many of the martyrs, we see Joan's example and ask ourself how far we are willing to follow our own beliefs and convictions. We consider how God may want to use us to accomplish unbelievable tasks that are far beyond our own capabilities. May St. Joan of Arc help us to be brave and unwavering in following our Lord, even to the end.

Memorial Day Prayer:
"Gracious and loving God, on this Memorial Day, we commend to Your loving care all those who have laid down their lives in service to our country. May they be granted eternal rest and may perpetual light shine upon them. May their sacrifice be united with the sacrifice of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and may they share in His Paschal Victory. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen."

May 24 - Eighth Sunday of Easter, Pentecost Sunday
Special Sequence for today's Mass: "Veni, Sancte Spiritus" 🔥

Come, Holy Spirit, come!
And from your celestial home
Shed a ray of light divine!

Come, Father of the poor!
Come, source of all our store!
Come, within our bosoms shine.

You, of comforters the best;
You, the soul’s most welcome guest;
Sweet refreshment here below;

In our labor, rest most sweet;
Grateful coolness in the heat;
Solace in the midst of woe.

O most blessed Light divine,
Shine within these hearts of yours,
And our inmost being fill!

Where you are not, we have naught,
Nothing good in deed or thought,
Nothing free from taint of ill.

Heal our wounds, our strength renew;
On our dryness pour your dew;
Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will;
Melt the frozen, warm the chill;
Guide the steps that go astray.

On the faithful, who adore
And confess you, evermore
In your sevenfold gift descend;

Give them virtue’s sure reward;
Give them your salvation, Lord;
Give them joys that never end. Amen.
Alleluia.

May 23 - Feast of Mary, Queen of Apostles

Today the Church honors Mary as the Queen of the Apostles. Truly, Mary was the first apostle. While she was the motivator behind Jesus’ first public miracle, you could argue that her apostleship began even earlier, at the moment of the Annunciation, when she accepted the call to do whatever the Son of God asked of her.

The Blessed Mother was with the Apostles at the wedding feast of Cana and until the foot of the cross. The Bible clearly states that she was with the Apostles in the upper room when the Holy Spirit descended. We know that she joined the household of the Apostle John, and private revelations suggest she played an important role in the community of Apostles until the day of her death, serving as a home base and spiritual mother for the band of world-traveling brothers.

As St. Pope Paul VI states in “Apostolicam Actuositatem, Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity, 4,”:

“The perfect example of this type of spiritual and apostolic life is the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Apostles … with her maternal charity she cares for these brothers of her Son who are still on their earthly pilgrimage and remain involved in dangers and difficulties until they are led into the happy fatherland. All should devoutly venerate her and commend their life and apostolate to her maternal care.”

Prayer: Mary, Queen of the Apostles, we thank you for the maternal care and advice you surely must have shared with the Apostles as they established the young Church on earth. We thank you that your maternal love extends to us in the same way, and you promise to pray for and care for all of your spiritual children still facing the peaks and valleys of life on earth. Help us always to honor and love your Son more perfectly. Amen.

May 21 - St. Christopher Magallanes and Companions

Today we remember St. Cristóbal Magallanes and his 24 companions remained faithful to Christ and were martyred during the two decades surrounding the Cristero Wars of Mexico. Under the persecution of Mexico’s anti-Catholic President Plutarco Calles, it’s estimated that anywhere from 90,000 to 250,000 people were killed. Seminaries, schools, and churches were closed, and people were regularly arrested and executed without trial.

St. Cristóbal, raised a poor and humble farmer and shepherd, entered the seminary to become a Catholic priest at age 19. When the government closed the main seminary in Guadalajara, Cristóbal opened a secret seminary at his parish. Within a year, the clandestine school had grown to 17 students.

As anti-Catholic persecution intensified, the seminarians and priests were often forced to flee into the mountains and hide in private homes to evade government soldiers.

St. Cristobal was arrested on May 21, 1927, while traveling to celebrate Mass, on the false accusation of supporting a violent rebellion. He wsa executed four days later by firing squad, without a trial, on May 25, 1927, in Colotitlán, standing next to a fellow priest, Fr. Agustín Caloca.

His final words were, ”I am innocent and I die innocent; I forgive the authors of my death from my heart and I ask God that my blood would serve to bring peace to divided Mexicans.”

In troubling times, we must consider what we are willing to endure in support of our faith. Are we willing to be faithful unto death, like the Cristero martyrs? Are we willing to suffer persecution in more subtle ways that challenge us via social pressures or reputation? May the Holy Spirit fortify us to hold fast to Jesus in every situation, strengthened by the example of the martyrs who forgave even their ex*****oners.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
