David Bruce Peterson
January 29, 1957-June 26, 2026

It is with deep love and profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, pastor, teacher, and friend, David Bruce Peterson.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Ruthie; his children, Ashley and her husband Dan, Matthew, and Nicole; and his cherished grandchildren, Ava, Molly, and Manny. He is also survived by his father Bruce, his three brothers and their families, along with countless friends and extended family whose lives were shaped by his kindness, presence, and deep love.

David was born on January 29, 1957, in Akron, Ohio. He moved to Schroon Lake in 1972, where he met Ruthie, the love of his life. He entered pastoral ministry in 1991 at Grace Bible Church in Barrington, New Jersey, faithfully beginning a lifelong calling of shepherding, teaching, and caring for others. While serving in ministry, he later attended Clarks Summit University, where he earned his Master of Divinity, further grounding and deepening his pastoral work.

In 2005, he returned to Schroon Lake, back to the place where he had lived as a teenager, to serve at Mountainside Bible Chapel, where he continued his calling with humility, wisdom, and deep care for his congregation.

His ministry was marked by counseling people, mentoring others, and building strong, lasting community wherever he served. He was known as a steady presence in people’s lives, offering guidance, encouragement, and a listening ear that made others feel deeply seen and valued.

His life was marked by a deep love for people. He never met a stranger and had a remarkable way of making everyone feel like they were his best friend. He deeply loved the Schroon Lake community and the people within it, investing in relationships that lasted far beyond any role or season. He loved others fully and generously, leaving warmth everywhere he went. He was a forever optimist, known for his great sense of humor, and was everyone’s cheerleader.

Outside of ministry, he deeply loved his family, reading, the arts, nature, history, photography, sports, and travel. He had a deep passion for all of these things, which reflected the curiosity, joy, and fullness with which he lived his life. He served his community in meaningful ways, including his involvement with the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce, his service on the Seagle Festival Board, and his volunteer work with Essex County Su***de Prevention. He also started a Celebrate Recovery chapter in Schroon Lake, extending his heart for helping others into practical and lasting support within his community.

Above all, his life was guided by a simple but profound truth he lived out: “Love God, love others.”

A service will be held on Wednesday, July 1 at 6:00 p.m. at Mountainside Bible Chapel in Schroon Lake, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mountainside Growing Together Campaign.

Thank you for your continued love, support, and prayers for the Petersons. Following surgery and thorough follow-up with their medical team, Dave, Ruthie, and their family share the following message:

“Dave has stage four metastatic cancer with an unknown origin at this time. We are moving forward with palliative care as we seek to manage his symptoms and pain as well as seek treatment options. Our focus is Dave’s comfort and quality of life, and we ask for prayers for our family as we move forward on this journey.”

As a church family, we are committed to caring for the Petersons in any way we can as they walk the road ahead. If you would like to serve the family in a specific way, please let us know, and we will reach out as we coordinate care.

As we seek to care for Pastor Dave and Ruthie on their long road ahead, a GoFundMe account has been created to help cover out-of-pocket costs already incurred, as well as travel expenses for his ongoing medical needs. By easing these burdens, we hope to give Dave and Ruthie the support they need to focus on healing and recovery.

*Update 6/6 - Dave is out of surgery and recovering. The surgeon said everything wen as planned and removal was complete. Thank you again for all of your prayer, Ruthie is so grateful. We expect a full report from pathology toward the end of next week.

*Update 6/4 - we're grateful to share that Dave has been transferred to Albany Med. Thanks again for the continued prayers and support.

Thank you to so many who have reached out with love and support for Pastor Dave and Ruthie Peterson following Dave's hospitalization last Friday. As many have heard, medical imaging revealed several masses, the most concerning of which are two located in his brain. It's been determined that these will need to be removed in surgery at Albany Med. Currently, Dave remains in Glens Falls Hospital while he waits for an available bed in Albany and the medical team continues further testing to confirm a diagnosis. Your prayers are appreciated as Dave, Ruthie, and their family walk the long, difficult road ahead. They continue to trust that even in the midst of this, God is with them, providing love and strength to sustain them one step at a time.
