The Reformed Church of Schodack at Muitzeskill A Church in the Reformed Church in America. We worship together at 11 on Sunday mornings

The Church at the Crossroads—A Brief History

In 1756, the Dutch farm families of Schodack, tired of having to travel all the way to Kinderhook for Sunday worship, decided to establish a congregation for themselves. At first Schodack and Kinderhook churches shared clergy, but soon Schodack had its own minister. The services were in Dutch, but in 1798 the consistory minutes record that the mini

ster was requested to give alternated sermons in Dutch and English. The first church building was situated in the hamlet of Schodack Landing. In 1810, land at the four corners was given to the church and the sanctuary was dismantled and moved by ox cart, timber by timber, up the long hill from Schodack Landing. Over sixty years later, in 1876, a disastrous fire completely razed the church. The community immediately rallied round and by December had completed constructing what stands today as our house of worship. Noteworthy architectural features of this building include the pressed tin ceiling and walls, installed around 1890 over the original painted plaster. There are beautifully crafted chestnut doors that lead you into a light-filled sanctuary for worship and reflection. Other buildings owned and cared for within the church complex include the “Friendship House,” built in 1906, and the Parsonage built in 1930. The craftsmanship of local builders is well reflected in both of these solidly constructed buildings.
