On the day between the leave-taking of the Ascension of Christ and Holy Pentecost, the divine Fathers ordained a memorial for all those who have fallen asleep throughout the ages in true worship and in hope of life everlasting.

This day is also known as the Saturday of Souls. We find the divine services for this day in the Pentecostarion. The Orthodox Church prays that the souls of the departed have obtained rest in the kingdom of heaven, and that our souls may ascend and join them there on the Last Day.

The faithful bring boiled wheat (kollyva) to church to honor their departed loved ones, following the words of our Lord Jesus Christ: "Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and die, it abideth alone; but if it dies, it bringeth forth much fruit" (John 12:24). By His burial, Christ gave life to the world. The boiled wheat signifies God's promise that those who have died will rise again to life.

This summer at Camp Saint Paul, we are blessed that His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros has designated the theme for our camp with the powerful words of Saint Paul: “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (II Corinthians 5:7). In a world where so many young people are searching for direction, certainty, and purpose, these words remind us that the Christian life is not about having all the answers or seeing the entire road ahead. It is about trusting God every step of the way. As His Eminence reminds us, “Faith calls us to move forward with courage, trusting that Christ is already walking before us.” Camp Saint Paul becomes more than just a week away; it becomes a sacred place where faith comes alive through prayer, friendship, laughter, worship, and the countless moments that shape the hearts of our youth and young adults. Our hope is that every camper and staff member leaves knowing that even when life feels uncertain, Christ walks beside us, calling us to live with courage, trust, and unwavering faith.
