In last week's Gospel, Peter was granted the status of first Apostle and leader of the Church. Why the change? It seems that, even after all this time, he is still thinking too small. Jesus rebukes him and encourages him to lift his eyes and mind up and outward to the surprising way in which the Lord is going to save humanity.

This is Fr. Frisoni's role here at St. Paul's to get us to see God's plan, as big and "impractical" as it may be! That's how God works.

Today, the Church commemorates John's death at the hands of King Herod. John's death foreshadows Jesus' death in some key ways. He is killed by a ruler who hesitates in executing him (Herod = Pilate), he is killed for speaking the hard truths to the people, and his disciples take his body away afterward. Whether John knew all the details or not, he had faith that he had spoken the truth to power. Saint John the Baptist, grant us at St. Paul's parish your courage today.

The Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill will hold the 2026 Mission Cooperation Appeal in our parishes on August 29–30, 2026.

It is wonderful to be able to sponsor the Diocesan Mission Cooperation Appeal in our parishes again this year. This weekend, August 29–30, 2026, we are honored to have Sister Colette Hanlon, SC with us to share the good news of the mission works of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in China, Korea and Ecuador.

The Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill first missioned four sisters from Pennsylvania to Korea in 1960. At that time, it took a month for the sisters to travel by freighter ship to Korea; now it takes only hours by airplane! As our world grows smaller, our hearts grow larger and we reach out to others.

We are pleased to have this opportunity to learn about the missions and to help with our prayers and donations. As the sisters continue to bring the love of the Lord to the people they serve, they need our help—they cannot do it alone! Wherever we may live we are all missionaries and can help in different ways!

Please give from the heart on August 29–30, 2026, to help spread the Gospel throughout the world and assist the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill to share God’s love with those in need. Your prayers and donations will bring blessings of hope and healing!

St. Bartholomew was martyred by being flayed alive - ouch! As such, he is the patron saint of those suffering from skin diseases and of anyone who works with leather (the skin of animals). The Church can be quite earthy at times in the patronages She chooses!
