Join us for worship this morning...

Join Covenant Church of Schaumburg for worship during the Season of Pentecost as we reflect on God's faithfulness, God's promises, and God's call upon our lives.

This week's readings from Genesis 18:1-15; 21:1-7 and Matthew 9:35-10:8 remind us that God often works in surprising ways, fulfills promises in God's timing, and invites ordinary people to participate in God's work in the world.

We are also pleased to welcome Rev. Sarah Winter as our guest preacher during this special weekend in the life of our congregation.

One of the greatest challenges I have encountered with people, inside and outside the church, is people’s loneliness. Think of the songs about loneliness. Paul McCartney sang “All the lonely people, where do they all come from.” Eric Carmen crooned “Livin' alone I think of all the friends I've known. But when I dial the telephone, nobody’s home. All by myself, don’t wanna be by myself anymore.” And Gilber O’Sullivan cried out In my hour of need, I truly am indeed, alone again, naturally.

Loneliness, no pun intended, is a singular pain.

As the church is formed in the book of Acts, they share everything in common. They meet together. They need each other.

And today, isolation zones form around people. The studies show the value of social media, but also note that nothing can replace human to human, face to face connection and interaction. And the same studies hold forth that if social media replaces human interaction, loneliness sets in. A real, painful loneliness.

Friends, there is still a place for in-person worship and pot luck suppers! We must strive in our life together to be community for people. And this community needs to extend both to and beyond Sunday mornings. Our community is to meet the needs of those attending here now and those who might yet attend.

If you were to dream, what ministry or event would meet the needs of ourselves and those in our area? How could we build community even moreso, on Sunday morning and beyond. Let’s dream! And we can sing and know, even more, of the community Bill Withers sang of: Lean on me when you’re not strong, and I’ll be your friend, I’ll help you carry on. For it won’t be long ‘til I’m gonna need somebody to lean on. Building community, even more. Let’s dream!

Starting this Sunday, for Seven Summer Sundays (June 7, 21, 28; July 5, 12, 19, 26), the lectionary takes us to the Book of Genesis (which means “beginning”). To prepare for worship and better engage these passages, here is each passage, with a summary statement and an italics question or comment:

✝️June 7: Genesis 12:1-9. God calls Abram to leave his home country and travel to a new, promise land. Why did Abram go?
✝️June 21: Genesis 21:8-21. God does not call Abraham’s Son Ishmael to inherit the promise land but does rescue Hagar and Ishmael - How does not being chosen and yet being rescued strike you?
✝️June 28: Genesis 22:1-14. Abraham is prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac - Why would Abraham be asked to sacrifice his son? What is problematic with the text? How do you understand it?
✝️July 5: Genesis 24:34-38, 42-49, 58-67. The marriage of Issac and Rebekah - Long before the birth of Christ, the lineage of Christ was preserved thru simple tasks.
✝️July 12: Genesis 25:19-34. Esau sells his birthright to Jacob - A glance at the sovereignty of God and our free will.
✝️July 19: Genesis 28:10-19a. Jacob’s dream of a ladder - What is the significance of this ladder dream?
✝️July 26: Genesis 29:15-28. Jacob’s wives - Why did it take so long for true love to come to fruition?

We hope preparing ahead of time each week by meditating on these texts will be helpful. May our journey these Sundays connect with practical application for our lives.

Join Covenant Church of Schaumburg for worship on this Pentecost Sunday as we celebrate the gift and ongoing presence of the Holy Spirit.

Pentecost reminds us that God continues to guide, comfort, inspire, and empower the Church today. As we gather in prayer, Scripture, music, and praise, we open our hearts to the Spirit’s leading in our lives and in our community.

During this Memorial Day weekend, we also pause with gratitude and remembrance for those who gave their lives in service to our country.

Our Devotionals last week Monday, in the book of James, was instructive. We noted in James 3:13-18, that there are two kinds of wisdom: false and real. It was noted that false wisdom includes self-absorption, including:

• Envy, which focuses on wanting what we don’t have but think we deserve
• Selfish ambition, which steps on others to advance self

Our study went on to the opening verses of James 4. There we noted fights and quarrels occurring, again because of envy and coveting, and asking for the wrong things (“stuff”). Self-absorption was the key ingredient for both false wisdom and fights and quarreling.

James offered antidotes to a selfish focus in life. Our group noted that:

• Raising a hand in class while another is speaking is a giveaway that the hand raiser is not listening to the speaker
• Taking time to reflect rather than “blurt” can be a sign of wisdom
• “Tell me more” is a good phrase to use when interacting with one who thinks differently than ourselves
• Humility, a key virtue for James, includes being open minded
• A focus away from Christ leads to a double-minded faith
• God’s wisdom leads to peace‍

We noted together that our Christ-focus underscores our gaining of true wisdom. This also allows us to move from a self-absorption and selfishness that leads to fights and bickering. Rather, echoing the Sermon on the Mount, “the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.” May our eyes be fixed on Jesus, the Author and Perfector of our faith, gaining true wisdom, and avoiding the trap of a double-minded faith.
