UUGSB Family Night 11/3 at 6:30 pm

In preparation of the Dia de los Mu***os (Day of the Dead) service on Sunday, November 5th, David and Kara will be putting up the ofrenda and the altar for the service on Friday, November 3rd. We need help with making paper flowers and setting up the altar. I thought this could be a fun family night (all members included) which will be child oriented. There will be a brief service following the format the children use in the RE room and, if there is interest, I will read a story about Dia de los Mu***os. I will provide drinks and a few snacks. Families can bring their dinner with them and eat it at the UUGSB. Kids are welcome to bring some of their Halloween candy to share for desert. Bring change for the piggy bank.

On Sunday, November 5th, the Dia de los Mu***os service will be held. It is an annual service of the UUGSB when we honor those who have died, including beloved pets. Those attending will have the opportunity to place a picture or a momento on the altar, say a few words, and light a candle in memory of the loved one being honored.

We invite all to attend both the Friday night and Sunday morning service. We hope families that have had conflicts on Sunday mornings will be able to attend on Friday night.

Please let us know if you can attend by commenting on Facebook or via email to [email protected].

We look forward to seeing you.

Marian Russo
Co-Chair, Sunday Services Committee
Vice President UUGSB

There is nothing like the love of a good old mutt. One that mixes characteristics from so many breeds in its mutli-branched lineage that embrace the idea of having a bulldog-Yorkie-dachshund-cocker cross.

Not long after I returned from the events in Selma, marking the 50th anniversary of the historic march it became clear to me, even though I was an interim pastor at the UU Congregation of the South Jersey Shore, that there was a compelling need at this time for a renewed civil rights movement, and f…

"The Canticle of the Creatures," by St. Francis of Assissi (paraphrased by us at UUGSB). In honor of this "Patron Saint of Animals and Ecology," we created a shadow puppet show depicting his poem.

"All praise be yours, Universe, through all you have, and first, Brother Sun, who brings the day; and through whom you give us light./ How beautiful is he, how radiant in all his splendor; of you, Universe, he bears the likeness.
All Praise be yours, through Sister Moon and the stars; in the heavens, bright, and precious, and fair.
All praise be yours, through Brothers Wind and Air, and Fair and Stormy, all the weather's moods, by which you cherish all that you have made.
All praise be yours, through Sister Water, so useful, humble, precious and pure.
All praise be yours, through Brother Fire, through whom you brighten up the night./ How beautiful is he, how cheerful!/ Full of power and strength.
All praise be yours, through our Sister Mother Earth, who sustains us and governs us, and produces various fruits with colored flowers and herbs.
All praise be yours, through those who grant pardon for love of you; through those who endure sickness and trial./ Happy are those who endure in peace, by you they will be crowned.

"Gathering the Water Spirit"
Presented by UUGSB RE Instructor, Robin Deery.

“There’s a river of my people and its flow is swift and strong,” sang Pete Seeger. During this multi-generational service culled from the UUA “Tapestry of Faith” curriculum, we will examine the life-giving properties of water and our growing responsibility as its caregivers. Audience participation will be welcome and encouraged during this service, which will include percussion activities, a game of charades, and storytelling.

"Circle of Trees"
(Multigenerational Sunday Service at UUGSB)

Presented by Robin Deery, UUGSB’s RE Instructor. There is a Chinese proverb that states,“The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.” As inhabitants of Earth, we need not only to be mindful of the effects of deforestation and pollution upon trees, but we must act as their guardians, as well. Join us for an interactive multi-generational service taken from the UUA “Tapestry of Faith” curriculum, during which we will explore our relationship with trees through movement, meditation, and song.

This service is one of 2 Sunday Services planned for our Summer Schedule (July 1- Sept 6). See our website (uugsb.org) for our other Sunday Service (Aug 16) as well as other events during the Summer.

"Celebrating Our Youth in Action"

A Multigenerational Celebration: Today we will acknowledge and celebrate the youth in our midst and how they are living our principles. A favorite principle of theirs is “Respect for the Interdependent Web of All Existence of Which We Are a Part”. Come hear what our children did locally to integrate this principle into their own lives. This is a day to honor and support the children (and families) that share our UU values. The future of our denomination rests in their hands.
