Happy Easter
Matthew 28:1–10; Acts 2:23–32; 1 Corinthians 15:3–5; John 20:14–18

“Lightning flashed around him, and his robe was dazzling white! The guards were stunned and terrified—lying motionless like dead men. Then the angel walked up to the tomb, rolled away the stone, and sat on top of it!
The women were breathless and terrified until the angel said to them, “There’s no reason to be afraid. I know you’re here looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn’t here—He has risen victoriously, just as He said! Come inside the tomb and see the place where our Lord was lying.”

HE HAS RISEN!

—Fulfillment, Victory, New Life

Celebration! Our God has robbed the grave—rolled away the stone.
Death is defeated.
Holy Saturday was waiting with hope!
Sunday morning is singing with joy!
We can celebrate—King Jesus is alive!

Abba,
Thank You—He is risen! Thank You for promises fulfilled! Thank You for promises validated!

Jesus invites us and welcomes us to come close, just as He did to His followers before and after His death and resurrection.

Worthy is the Lamb! We praise You, Abba, Jesus, Holy Spirit—our beautiful and amazing triune God! Alleluia! Thank You for our redemption and the One who sets us free! Thank You for the gift of eternal life!

May we be people who love the Lord our God with all our hearts, all our souls, and all our strength. May we be people who love our neighbors as ourselves. May we be people who put our hope and faith in Jesus. May we be people who seek Jesus, spend time with Jesus, become more like Jesus, and practice His way.

Hallelujah! He has risen!

“With my whole heart, with my whole life,
And with my innermost being,
I bow in wonder and love before you, the holy God!
Yahweh, you are my soul’s celebration.
How could I ever forget the miracles of kindness
you’ve done for me?
You kissed my heart with forgiveness,
in spite of all I’ve done.”

Thank You, Abba. Amen.

Holy Saturday (The Great Sabbath)
John 19:30; Luke 23:55–56; Matthew 27:57–66; Isaiah 40:31

Good Friday—“It is finished”—tetelestai—paid in full—complete—Jesus took His last breath and died.

Behold—The Lamb of God—the Passover Lamb—Jesus was the sacrifice—the Atonement.

Holy Saturday is the “in between”—in between crucifixion and resurrection.
A day of stillness, silence, waiting in hope, and anticipation.

This day marks His burial and triumphant descent into Sheol before the resurrection.

We can remember that even in grief and what feels dark, God is always working.

He does what He says He will do. He keeps His promises, and we can trust Him with all our hearts.
We wait, we abide—He delivers, He renews our strength—we qavah (entwine, bind together with Abba). Actively, we wait.

Abba,
What a week of emotions, tensions, and events. Sometimes the hardest part is in the waiting—in the “have courage,” holding fast, or in the stillness and quiet when everything has settled. This can be when grief and grievance seem the loudest or feel larger than life.

It can be daunting, heavy, lonely—where are the answers? What do we do next? How can we fix this? Being human can be frustrating.

But, Abba, we know as Christians that You are in control, always. Nothing gets past You. Your timing is perfect. If we could just remember that it isn’t understanding we need; ultimately, it is You we seek—it is You we need. More and more of You.

Thank You for Your Word that sustains us and gives us life. Our hope is in Jesus. We can confidently wait with expectation for You, Abba.

Teach us to live a praying life. Holy Spirit, help us discern where in our hearts we are doubting or trying to assert control when we need to surrender and trust.

Thank You Abba for these moments that grow our faith. Where we really learn to lean on You and find out where our hearts truly are.

Jesus’s death looked or seemed like all was lost. We know though how You love to transcend human logic and use paradox.

Defeating death with death. Using a cross that symbolized defeat (as in failure) and turning it into defeated (as in victory) through Jesus. Wow!

May we be people who trust in You with all our hearts and stop trying to lean on our own understanding. May we seek You wholeheartedly and always first. We love You, Abba. Amen.

Good Friday
John 1:29; Luke 23:1–49

Good Friday is known as good because of a couple of things:
Good was often used as a synonym for holy or pious.
Good because, through Jesus’ death, came forgiveness, redemption, salvation, and reconciliation with God—without Friday’s sacrifice, there would be no joy on Easter Sunday.

Good Friday commemorates the death of Jesus on the Cross.

Jesus was arrested and put on trial by the Sanhedrin, the Jewish council.
During His interrogation by the High Priest Caiaphas, Jesus was asked if He was the "Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One."
When Jesus answered, "I am," the High Priest tore his clothes—a traditional sign of outrage—and declared it blasphemy.

They took Him to Pontius Pilate, and Pilate ordered Jesus to be flogged (scourging).
They used a flagrum—a whip with multiple leather thongs embedded with pieces of bone or lead. It didn't just bruise; it literally tore the skin and muscle from the back.

Roman soldiers mocked Jesus and gave Him a crown made of thorns.
After Pilate presented the beaten Jesus to the crowd, and they still demanded crucifixion, Pilate officially "washed his hands" of the matter.

Jesus was made to carry His cross to Golgotha but stumbled, and Simon of Cyrene carried the cross for the remainder of the journey.

At Golgotha, the place of the skull, Roman soldiers drove nails through His wrists (or hands) and feet to fasten Him to the cross.
The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke tell of a darkness covering the land from noon until three in the afternoon.

Loving Abba,
We thank You for Jesus. He paid it all. He bore the sins of the world.

Writing this prayer and reading this, we can’t help but sit here quietly taking it all in.

Horrible, awful, despicable, rotten, inhumane things were done to our precious Jesus.

Jesus is everything we all could ever want to be—kind, patient, loving, selfless, good, faithful, friend.

Our Good Shepherd—The Prince of Peace, The Wonderful Counselor, God with us, unblemished lamb, lavishly loved Son of God—betrayed, arrested, interrogated, spit on, broken, beaten, scourged, torn flesh, bloody, weakened, mocked, crowned with thorns— His brow, pressed with thorns, carried the curse we could not bear. Then adding injury to injury nailed to a Cross fighting to breathe, every breath excruciating. Oh Abba, it is atrocious, it is heart wrenching.

It was our sin.
Your love was greater.

Greater love has no man—
—Behold the lamb of God

What love—
What is the breadth, and length,
and height, and depth.

Thank You, Abba.
Thank You, Jesus.

Our hearts are humble before You. We love You. We give You all the glory, all honor, all praise. Amen

Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday)
John 13:1–17; Matthew 26:26–29; Psalm 116:13

This is the fifth day of Holy Week.
Maundy comes from the Latin mandatum, meaning “command.”

Jesus said in John 13:34:
“I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another.”

During the Passover meal with His disciples, Jesus washes their feet—an example of how to serve one another in love. This was a task normally performed by a servant.

This is the meal referred to as the Last Supper.
At this supper, Jesus takes the bread and wine—making the “My body” and “My blood” statements—teaching them the Eucharist, also known as Communion, and reframing Passover.

The Eucharist symbolizes the New Covenant.
Jesus is now the Passover Lamb.

Judas leaves the dinner to finalize his betrayal, returning later with soldiers to the garden, where he betrays Jesus with a kiss.

After the meal, Jesus goes to the Garden of Gethsemane, where He prays—agonizing to Abba over what is to come—“Take this cup from Me,” yet in willful obedience, trusting Abba: “Yet not My will, but Yours be done.”

Abba,
We thank You for Holy Thursday.

As we read, we know that Jesus knew His hour had come. So much was said and done at the final meal. We thank You for the words of Jesus. We wonder if, as He was telling the disciples to take heart, He was also finding courage, leaning into You and Your promises, Abba (maybe this was His resolve as well).

So much love, Abba, is present in all of this because of Your presence.

How deep and rich, extravagant and lavish, is Your love. Washing feet—even the feet of Judas. Feasting on the meal, yes, but also on company, companionship, the closeness, and Your love, Abba.

Greater love has no man—Jesus laid down His life obediently, yes, but willfully. His love, too.

His body broken. His blood spilled.
His precious hands that broke the bread, and His precious feet—He is always walking with us—these very hands and feet, later pierced by nails.

Oh Abba, we thank You for Your precious Son, Your Lamb.
All to Jesus, forever love and trust Him. Amen.
