Sometimes the hardest part of coming back to God is believing that He really wants us back.

We know our failures. We remember the choices we regret, and shame can convince us that what we have done has changed the way God sees us.

In Luke 15, the son came home expecting far less than what his father was ready to give. What he discovered tells us something important about the heart of God and the grace He offers us.

There's a moment in Luke 15 where everything changes for the prodigal son. It's not when he gets his life together. It's not when he apologizes enough. It's something else entirely, and it's the same thing that moves us toward God when we've wandered.

This week's devotional looks at what finally got the son moving, and what it might look like for you.

There are some things we simply cannot fix on our own. That can be difficult to admit. We like to believe that if we try harder, make better decisions, or give ourselves enough time, we can get things back under control. Even when we realize we have wandered from God, we may try to clean ourselves

Sometimes the hardest words to say are, “I need help.”

When we realize we have wandered from God, our instinct may be to fix things first. We tell ourselves we need to get our lives together, make better choices, or become a little more worthy before we can come back.

But we cannot fix ourselves.

The son in Luke 15 finally got up and went home because he remembered something more important than his own failure: his father was good.

The same is true for us.

Finding your way back to God does not begin with getting everything right. It begins with trusting that God is good enough to come to exactly as you are.

Maybe your prayer today is simply:

“God, I need help. I believe You are good. Help me take the next step toward You.”
