We are living in an hour when it is necessary for us to draw close to God. There are so many views people hold about the truth that it can be very misleading. Who is right, and how can you tell what is right? Jesus said, “If ye continue in my Word, then are ye my disciples indeed, and you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31, 32). You can only know the truth more intimately the closer you are to God. Draw ever so close to Him, and you will gain that intimate knowledge of Him that will keep you on the path of truth.
“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”
- John 17:3
Learning to know God depends entirely on how close we draw to Him. This is obvious in any relationship, but it is especially true when it comes to our knowledge of God. The nearer we are, the more we can see and understand things we might never recognize from afar. Many people in the church claim to know God, but only from a distance. Their lives and actions demonstrate this truth. A believer cannot say they know God and live in ways that contradict who He is.
For example, the scripture teaches that God gives because that is His nature. Giving is an expression of love, and God is love. Jesus said,“God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”(John 3:16). It was love that moved God's heart to give His Son. You cannot separate the heart of giving from love any more than you can separate water from wet or fire from heat. When people choose to compromise certain aspects of their lives, especially in character, it shows they do not truly know God. You cannot violate His nature and claim to know Him. John put it this way: “He that loveth not knoweth not God, for God is love” (1 John 4:8).
In Paul’s letter to the church in Ephesus, he said, “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of Glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him” (Eph. 1:17). This word “knowledge” is epignosis. The Amplified Bible describes it as “deep and intimate” knowledge. That is because this type of knowledge is meant to bring us close to God. When we desire to know Him on this level, we must have God open our eyes to see and know Him through the spirit of wisdom and revelation. It takes the personal engagement of the Holy Spirit to bring us closer. He is the one who reveals to us the things of God, but He is also essential in helping us know God.
Just as there are different levels of knowing anything, there are also levels of knowing God. I know who the President of the United States is, but I don’t know him personally. My knowledge is about Him, but not in a more personal way. We can know about God but not truly know Him. This is also true concerning our understanding of the truth of God’s Word. John said, “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; for the life was manifested and we have seen it, and bear witness, and show unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us” (1 John 1:1, 2). This statement reveals the foundation on which John writes his epistle. He is not sharing his opinion. He is speaking from his personal experience and knowledge of God. You can read through this epistle and find that he used the word “know” 30 times. This is because he saw deeper into the person of Christ than just a man from Galilee. He knew Him as God and realized that true knowledge of God comes through eternal life. He concludes this epistle by confirming this same truth: “And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life” (1 John 5:20). We could say it this way: Knowing God is knowing eternal life, and to know eternal life is to experience Him more intimately and personally. To put it simply, you cannot experience eternal life and live contrary to it, any more than you can experience a personal knowledge of God and live contrary to His nature and ways.
Did you know there are over 45,000 denominations worldwide? If that doesn’t illustrate the vast differences in our understanding of God, I don’t know what else could. Paul said, “There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of us all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all” (Eph. 4:4-6). When we read a statement like this, we must reflect on how varied we are as the people of God, and it does not make any sense at all for us to be so divided. How can we truly say we are the church and be so directly opposed to what the other believes? We must ask ourselves, “Is this a possible cause for why the church is living so far below its privileges?
I think about Caleb and Joshua, who were ready to take Jericho but were held back another 40 years because most of the people refused to believe. Some well-meaning, good-hearted Christians might face limitations caused by this widespread failure to live as “one body.” Throughout the Book of Acts, whenever there was a major surge of healing, restoration, and miracles, it happened when everyone was in “one heart and one soul.” Even Pentecost occurred with the 120 in the Upper Room, “all” in one accord in one place (Acts 2:1, 4:32). Clearly, that should say something to us all!
As we approach the final days, our understanding of God must deepen. With numerous teachings, prophecies, and doctrines floating around in the church, only our personal, intimate knowledge of God will be the key to navigating through all that is distorted and misleading by human wisdom rather than the guidance of the Holy Spirit. If we seek to know Him, truly and intimately know Him, not only will the Holy Spirit bring us deeper into seeing and knowing the true nature of God, but He will also inspire us to understand how we are to live and represent Him in truth.
DEFINING MOMENTS
What will it take in these last days to perfectly align ourselves with God’s divine will and purpose? The more we seek to know Him, the more we should be sensing a call to be ever mindful and aware of the vast differences within the body of Christ. We do not want to exacerbate the problem by compounding the issues we differ on, but rather seek love and forgiveness, and emphasize the common goal of knowing God. With so much sensationalism and commercialization, we must keep our focus on sound doctrine. If you want to know God more perfectly, then turn your attention to this great quest: Make love your aim, maintain a pure heart, separate yourself from everything that ties you to this world, and give yourself wholly to serving Him (Col. 3:1-3, 2 Cor. 6:14-18, Phil. 3:10-14).
CONFESSION
Today, I will devote my time and attention to drawing near to God. I want to know Him more deeply and more intimately. While the world continues to reel into more deception, I purpose in my heart to cling to the Word of God in all godliness, holiness, and truth.
PRAYER
Father, I deeply and passionately desire to know you more. I want to be so filled with such intimate knowledge of you that my whole life is devoted to being close to your heart. What a great privilege awaits me when I make this my aim. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
