Ascribing Glory Where It Belongs

"Ascribe to the Lord, O mighty ones, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness... The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord is enthroned as King forever. The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace." - Psalm 29:1-2, 10-11

In our achievement-driven world, we're tempted to claim credit for our successes. Yet the psalmist calls us to a different practice: ascribing glory to God. This isn't about diminishing ourselves, but recognizing the true source of our strength and stability.

When we acknowledge God's sovereignty—even amid life's chaos—we find peace. His throne remains unshaken. As we worship and give Him the honor He deserves, we receive the blessing we truly need: His strength and peace.

Prayer: Lord, help us recognize Your hand in all things and give You the glory You deserve. Grant us the peace that comes from trusting in Your eternal kingdom. Amen.

The Joy of Recognition

"When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: 'Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!'"
Luke 1:41-42

In this tender moment, Elizabeth recognizes something extraordinary—Mary carries the promised Messiah. Her response isn't skepticism but immediate spiritual insight. The baby within her responds to Jesus's presence, and Elizabeth's words affirm Mary's faith.

We too are called to recognize God's work in others' lives. When we encounter someone walking faithfully through difficulty or experiencing God's blessing, do we pause to acknowledge it? Elizabeth's example teaches us that spiritual awareness deepens our connections and strengthens one another's faith. Today, look for God's fingerprints in someone's story and speak it aloud.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, open my eyes to recognize Your work in those around me, and give me courage to speak blessing and affirmation into their lives. Amen.

TODAY’S THEME

Though the word “trinity” is not found in the scriptures, today’s second reading includes the apostolic greeting that begins the liturgy: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. In the gospel Jesus sends his disciples forth to baptize in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. More than a doctrine, the Trinity expresses the heart of our faith: we have experienced the God of creation made known in Jesus Christ and with us always through the Holy Spirit. We celebrate the mystery of the Holy Trinity in word and sacrament, as we profess the creed, and as we are sent into the world to bear witness to our faith.

The Great Commission: Our Shared Mission

"Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'" - Matthew 28:18-20

As Jesus' final words to His disciples, this passage reveals His heart for the world. He doesn't send us alone—He promises His constant presence. Making disciples isn't reserved for pastors or missionaries; it's our shared calling. Whether through conversations, living our faith authentically, or welcoming others into God's family, we participate in His redemptive work. His authority backs our efforts, and His companionship sustains us.

Prayer: Jesus, empower us to share Your love boldly and faithfully, trusting in Your presence with us always. Amen.

Love Expressed Through Obedience

"If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth." - John 14:15-17

Jesus connects love with obedience in a way that might seem counterintuitive. He's not demanding rigid rule-following; rather, He's saying that genuine love naturally expresses itself through our choices. When we truly love someone, we honor what matters to them.

Here's the beautiful promise: as we follow Jesus's teachings, the Holy Spirit becomes our constant companion—our advocate, counselor, and guide. This isn't about earning God's favor through perfect behavior. It's about deepening our relationship with Him through willing obedience, which opens us to experience His Spirit's transforming presence in our daily lives.

Prayer: Jesus, help me understand that obeying You is an expression of my love for You. Fill me with Your Spirit as I seek to follow Your way. Amen.

Guarding What God Has Entrusted to Us

"I am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day. What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us." - 2 Timothy 1:12b-14

Paul reminds Timothy—and us—of a profound truth: God guards what we entrust to Him. But we also have a responsibility. We're called to protect the spiritual treasures we've received: faith, truth, and love in Christ.

In our daily lives, this means being intentional about what we allow into our minds and hearts. We guard our faith through prayer, Scripture, and community. We protect sound teaching by questioning what we hear against God's Word. The Holy Spirit empowers this sacred responsibility.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, help us guard the precious faith You've given us, keeping our hearts centered on Christ's truth and love. Amen.

When We Feel Small, God Feels Great

"Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens... When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them?" - Psalm 8:1-4

David gazes at the night sky and feels wonderfully small. The vastness of creation reminds him that God's greatness far exceeds our understanding. Yet here's the paradox: despite our insignificance in the cosmos, God notices us. He cares deeply.

We live in a culture that constantly tells us to be bigger, better, more impressive. But David teaches us something liberating: our worth isn't measured by our accomplishments or status. It comes from being known and loved by the One who created everything. When we release our need to be great and simply rest in God's greatness, we find true peace.

Prayer: Lord, help me see my smallness not as insignificance, but as an invitation to trust in Your infinite care and majesty. Amen.

The Spirit's Generous Distribution

"Two men, however, had remained in the camp: one named Eldad and the other named Medad. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them, and they prophesied in the camp." - Numbers 11:26-30

When God's Spirit fell upon seventy elders at the tent of meeting, two men—Eldad and Medad—received the same gift while remaining in camp. Joshua saw this as irregular and wanted it stopped. But Moses understood something profound: God's Spirit cannot be confined or controlled by our expectations.

We often limit where we think God works. Yet the Spirit moves freely, blessing whom He chooses, when He chooses. Our role isn't to gatekeep God's gifts but to celebrate them, trusting His wisdom over our systems.

Prayer: Lord, help us rejoice when Your Spirit works in unexpected ways and through unexpected people. Free us from the need to control how You move. Amen.

When Words Fail Us

"In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express." - Romans 8:26-27

Sometimes our hearts are too full, too broken, or too confused for words. In these moments, we're not abandoned—we're held. The Holy Spirit knows our deepest needs before we can articulate them, translating our sighs and tears into prayers God understands perfectly.

We don't need eloquent words or perfect theology. Our weakness becomes an invitation for God's strength to work within us. When we're speechless, the Spirit speaks for us.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, thank You for interceding when I cannot find words. Help me trust that my silence and struggles are heard by a God who knows my heart completely. Amen.
