Matthew 5:17-19 means that Jesus did not come to destroy the Hebrew Scriptures (the Law and the Prophets), but rather to fulfill and complete them. He established that every part of God's law remains important and valid, and those who honor and teach it will be recognized in the Kingdom of Heaven.

This month we observe Older Americans Month. Our elderly offer us wisdom and history and friendship. While aging has its own challenges, there are existing ministry- and community-based services which help older Americans make plans, remain engaged in the community, and access any supports needed.

Prayer: More than ever I find myself in the hands of God.
This is what I have wanted all my life from my youth.
But now there is a difference;
the initiative is entirely with God.
It is indeed a profound spiritual experience
to know and feel myself so totally in God's hands.
- Pedro Arrupe, SJ

Action: Many parishes have wonderful homebound ministries. Check with your parish if there are any needs and ways to be involved.

Almsgiving: Here in our diocese we are blessed by the presence of the Little Sisters of the Poor. If you are able to volunteer and really get to know the residents, it can be one of the most joyful experiences. You can also donate at https://littlesistersofthepoorkansascity.org/donate/.

On World Environment Day, we are reminded of our interconnectedness and need to protect the most vulnerable populations and our beautiful Earth we are called to steward.

Prayer: God reveals Himself through Scripture and Tradition, but also in glimpses through nature. How do the depths of the ocean speak to you of who God is? How about the number of grains of sand? And the variety of life we can encounter on the planet?

Action: Did you know our washing machines can release microplastics into our water system? Two easy ways to address this is to make sure you wash clothes on full loads, and to install a microfiber filter into your washing machine system.

Almsgiving: Did you know many of our local parishes are creating environmental ministries? One example is the Green Team at St. Elizabeth’s, KCMO. They are creating many opportunities for parish involvement in reducing waste and growing in ecospirituality. You can learn more and support them at https://sites.google.com/view/ste-eco/home.

Boniface, known as the apostle of the Germans, was an English Benedictine monk who gave up being elected abbot to devote his life to the conversion of the Germanic tribes. Two characteristics stand out: his Christian orthodoxy and his fidelity to the pope of Rome.

Catholic social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society. There are several key themes of this teaching.

Care for God's Creation

We show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of creation. We are called to protect people and the planet, living our faith in relationship with all of God’s creation. This environmental challenge has fundamental moral and ethical dimensions that cannot be ignored.
