We look forward to welcoming everyone to Regina Coeli Hall on April 8 for a special Theology on Tap to celebrate the Easter Octave. We welcome to town Charles Weaver as he presents Humble Magnificence, Sober Splendor: The Place of Chant in the Christian Life. His talk will reflect on Gregorian chant in relation to other sacred music, chant as an interpretive guide to prayer, and chant and liturgical renewal.

Charles Weaver is on the faculty of the Juilliard School, where he teaches historical music theory, historical ear training, plucked-string instruments, and music history. He holds a PhD in music theory from the City University of New York. His research interests include the rhythm of Gregorian chant and the history of the theory of harmony. He serves as editor of the journal Sacred Music, published by the Church Music Association of America, which, as a continuation of the nineteenth-century journal Cecilia, is the longest-running musical periodical in North America. He is organist and choirmaster at St. Mary’s Church in Norwalk, Connecticut, where he specializes in the liturgical performance of medieval and renaissance music. He has been assistant conductor for Juilliard Opera and has directed opera productions for Dell’Arte Opera and the Yale Baroque Opera Project. He has also played continuo in opera productions at the University of Maryland, the Cleveland Institute of Music, Princeton University, and the Boston Early Music Festival. As a collaborative musician, he has performed with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the Virginia Symphony. In addition to being a regular member of the ensemble Quicksilver, his chamber-music projects have included engagements with Piffaro, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Folger Consort, Apollo’s Fire, Blue Heron, the Newberry Consort, and Musica Pacifica. He also once arranged Saint-Saëns’s “Swan” for cello and theorbo and accompanied Yo-Yo Ma at a gala performance for Orchestra Lumos.

As anyone who had attended Theology on Tap at the Knights this past year has noticed, we have been regular stretching the limits of the balcony - using every last chair. The tree lined view has been a wonderful home for our monthly gatherings for several years, and now we are ready to move into a larger space.

Beginning in February, all Theology on Tap talks will now take place in Regina Coeli Hall at the Cathedral (222 E Harris Street). We will be providing wine, beer, and non-alcoholic options for all to enjoy in addition to lights snacks. A small kiosk will be available where you can give a donation to support Theology on Tap.

As usual, the doors will open at 7:30pm for everyone to gather and the talk will begin at 8:00pm.

We look forward to seeing you in Regina Coeli Hall!

Instead of meeting the last Wednesday in March during Holy Week, we are convening on Wednesday, April 3 to celebrate Easter with a special Theology on Tap in Regina Coeli Hall at the Cathedral.

Deacon Mullin will offer an historical description of the earliest known liturgies, describing the rituals used in both the East and West as presented by some of the most ancient Church texts and authors. Our time together will include a summary of the wines of the Greco-Roman world and a sampling of two varietals likely used at these liturgies, and most probably consumed by Jesus and his contemporaries.

You can RSVP at the link below. Requested but not required for attendance.
