This past Sunday, on Ascension Sunday, we remembered that the disciples were told not to stand staring into heaven waiting for Jesus to return.

The church is called to something more.

We are called to become Christ’s body in the world — healing, loving, grieving, serving, and staying present with one another.

The Spirit has been given.
The mantle has passed.
And the story continues through us.

What if we’ve been hearing this passage through the wrong word all along?

In John 14, Jesus never says “obey.” He says “keep.”

Not the language of domination. Not fear. Not coercion. The language of trust. Of relationship. Of a shepherd who stays with the flock and invites us to care for one another the same way.

Easter isn’t a finish line. It’s a beginning. This past Sunday’s sermon reminded us that the risen Christ meets us where despair has taken root and patiently, persistently, leads us back toward life.

To our neighbors and friends who may feel like they don’t quite fit the expectations the world sets—please hear this:

You are seen. You are valued. You are wonderfully made. Your life is a gift, and your courage matters.

We want to say clearly and without hesitation: our transgender siblings are beloved by God. There is no asterisk on God’s love, no conditions, no exceptions. Nothing about who you are places you outside the reach of grace.

God’s creation is not a single note played over and over—it is a song made richer by many different instruments, each with its own sound and purpose. Every part matters. Every voice belongs.

As a church, we are called not just to speak love, but to live it—to listen more than we lecture, to lead with compassion instead of fear, and to help create harmony where all people can belong and be heard.

There is a place for you in God’s song. And there is a place for you here, too.
