Why is Loving My Neighbor So Hard? Maybe we need more practice! Read Paster John's article on Now Habersham for his take.

There was a time when I never thought twice about walking, running, lifting something heavy, or sitting through a long day. Then I injured my back in college, and everything changed.

Like many people, I reached for Advil. It got me through the day, but it never solved the problem.

Then a friend suggested physical therapy.

PT wasn't a quick fix. It required strengthening muscles I didn't even know I had and learning an entirely new way to move. It took patience, intention, and practice. Looking back, I realize it taught me much more than how to care for my back.

Our communities are hurting, too.

When loving our neighbors becomes difficult, it's tempting to avoid the people who challenge us or retreat into spaces where everyone thinks like we do. But that's the relational equivalent of taking Advil—it masks the pain without addressing what's causing it.

Maybe what we need isn't another quick fix. Maybe we need the spiritual equivalent of physical therapy: learning to listen, extending grace, and exercising compassion.

That was the heart behind our three-day program, "Loving My Neighbor Shouldn't Be This Hard!" at Nacoochee Presbyterian Church. It wasn't about ignoring our differences, it was about learning a healthier way to live with them and to walk together as neighbors again.

Healing takes time, and so does learning to love our neighbors well. But when we trust God, embrace the hard work, and refuse to give up on one another, even the hardest steps become easier.

Community invited to final night of Nacoochee Presbyterian Church’s VBS series July 31

SAUTEE NACOOCHEE, Ga. — Nacoochee Presbyterian Church is inviting the community to attend the final evening of its intergenerational Vacation Bible School series, “Loving My Neighbor Shouldn’t Be This Hard!”, taking place tonight, Friday, July 31, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Designed for children, youth and adults, the free event explores what it means to love one’s neighbor through faith, community and peacemaking. The evening begins with a shared dinner, followed by inspiring speakers, interactive workshops and age-appropriate activities centered on Jesus’ teaching to “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39).

Adult participants will hear from community leaders involved in justice, reconciliation and community building while taking part in hands-on experiences that encourage compassion, understanding and stronger relationships across differences.

Youth activities include baking communion bread, creative writing, preparing food together and learning practical ways to become peacemakers in their own communities.

The program concludes Saturday, Aug. 1, with an optional group trip to the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta. A fee applies for the Saturday excursion.

The Vacation Bible School is free and open to all ages, and advance registration is not required.

For our last night of VBS next Friday night, we’ll consider one final question:

💬 What does a community look like when neighbors care for one another?

We’re honored to welcome representatives from the Newtown Florist Club, including Rev. Rose Johnson Mackey, executive director of this historic Gainesville organization that has spent 75 years advocating for justice, empowering young leaders, and strengthening the community.

What began in 1950 as neighbors gathering to support one another through life’s joys and hardships has grown into a powerful force for social, environmental, and economic justice. Their story reminds us that lasting change often begins with simple acts of care—showing up for a neighbor, sharing a burden, and working together for the common good.

We hope you’ll join us as each night or even just for one night of an inspiring time together next week!

We’re excited to welcome John Lash as our Thursday evening speaker next week at VBS. John will help us explore how we can approach disagreement with curiosity, compassion, and grace—finding ways to stay connected even when we don’t see eye to eye.

In a world where conflict often creates distance, what if it could instead become an opportunity for deeper understanding, stronger relationships, and faithful community?

We’re honored to welcome Josina Guess as our opening speaker. Josina is a writer, editor, mother, and farmer from Comer, Georgia, and serves as Associate Editor of Sojourners magazine. Her work has appeared in Christian Century, The Bitter Southerner, Oxford American, and numerous anthologies. She also spent six years living and serving at Jubilee Partners, a Christian hospitality community that welcomes refugees from around the world.

With her passion for storytelling, community, and faith, Josina will help us explore what it means to listen deeply—to one another, to our neighbors, and to God.

Join us as we begin a week of meaningful conversations, learning, and growing together. We can’t wait to see you!

Important help for our neighbors tomorrow!

The Matthew 25 Alliance Resource Center is returning to White County this Tuesday, July 21, offering practical support for neighbors who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of losing their housing.

The Matthew 25 Alliance is a partnership of churches in White and Habersham counties working together to support individuals and families facing housing instability.

During this session, participants can receive help obtaining essential identification documents such as a driver's license, state ID, Social Security card, or birth certificate. These documents are often necessary to apply for benefits, secure employment, access housing, and connect with other vital services.

Attendees will also meet with volunteers, complete a brief intake, and be connected with Ninth District Opportunity and other community resources.
