BOO! Happy Halloween/All Hallows Eve!

Did you know that the celebration of Halloween has roots in Catholicism? October 31, the day before All Saints Day, is also known as "All Hallows Eve," shortened to "Hallowe'en" ("hallow" or "hallowed" being an old English word for a holy person, "e'en" being a shortened form of "eve" or "evening."). It forms a sort of Triduum with All Saints Day and All Souls Day, reminding us that we, the Church Militant on earth, are spiritually tied to the Church Triumphant (those souls in heaven, known and unknown, celebrated on All Saints Day) and the Church Suffering (those souls in purgatory, remembered on All Souls Day). Up until 1955, All Hallows Eve had its own proper liturgy, and it was celebrated as a day of fasting in anticipation of the next day's feast.

While Catholic celebrations of Halloween should avoid the references to the demonic that have crept into secular celebrations, even the spooky elements of Halloween can remind us that death is not something that we fear, because we know that it is just a passage into our heavenly homeland and into perfect union with God and His saints.

Tomorrow is a Holy Day of Obligation, so make sure to check your pastorate's bulletin or website for Mass times! And don't forget the candy for tonight!

🌧️💙 Join Us in Operation Mercy on Wheels! Help Black Mountain, NC Recover from Hurricane Helene 💙🌧️

Our pastorate is coming together to deliver essential supplies to Black Mountain, North Carolina, a community that has been severely affected by Hurricane Helene. With flooding, wind damage, and power outages, many families are without basic necessities. Together, we can bring hope and aid where it’s needed most!

How You Can Help:
🙏 Donate Supplies – We are collecting non-perishable dry goods (no canned food or MREs), flashlights, batteries, survival gear, pillows, blankets, baby items, and more. Bring your donations to St. Aloysius Church by October 21st. The semi will leave with supplies on October 25 or 26.

🙏 Donate Funds – 100% of your monetary donations will go toward purchasing supplies to fill the trailer. Donate easily through our PayPal Giving Fund here: paypal.com/us/fundraiser/charity/1650640 or you can give cash or checks to Divine Mercy Parish.

🙏 Sponsor the Operation – Local businesses can join us as sponsors. Business logos will be displayed on a banner and t-shirt, recognizing your support for this mission.

Together with the Cajun Navy and Samaritan’s Purse, we’ll be taking these donations directly to those in need. Let’s unite to bring Mercy on Wheels to Black Mountain!

For more details on how to help or to volunteer, contact our parish office or comment below. Your support, prayers, and generosity mean the world to those who need it most.

Thank you for helping us be the hands and feet of Christ during this time. 🙏💪

Though it's generally not celebrated liturgically, September 24 is the feast of Mary as the Mother of Mercy!

Mary is popularly invoked as "Mother of Mercy" in the "Hail, Holy Queen" prayer, but what does that title mean? For one thing, it signifies that Mary is the masterpiece of God's mercy in the world and a sign of His "prevenient" grace ("prevenient" meaning "to come before."). In preserving Jesus' Mother from sin before we could even ask for it, before we knew that we needed it, God was working on our behalf by preparing a most fitting vessel for the arrival of His Son in the world. But Mary is also, of course, the Mother of Jesus Christ, our Savior, who is Mercy Itself! And as the Mediatrix of all graces, she mediates Jesus' mercy to us in a special way, giving us all that we need from the Heart of Her Son through her own maternal heart.

In art, you may see Mary depicted as sheltering people under her outstretched mantle; this image is commonly known as the "Virgin of Mercy." The image is also often paired with an ancient Marian prayer, the "Sub tuum praesidium" ("Beneath thy mercy"; in the Latin Church, it's often translated thus: "We fly to thy protection, O Holy Mother of God; Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.").

We pray in a special way for our own Mary, Mother of Mercy Pastorate today! Mary, Mother of Mercy, pray for us!
