Ministry
The first pastor, and one of its founders, was Rev. Peter Overbaugh. He served our church and Woodstock Reformed Church consecutively for many years. He was pastor of our congregation for 37 years, the longest pastorate in our history, and 25 pastors have served since then. In 2009 we hired our first female pastor, Rev. Jennifer Bendelius.
During our history, five of our members have gone on to serve our Lord in the ministry, the Revs. John A. Davis, Richard p. Milliken, Titus E. Davis, Walter Griffen, and Louis Hieber.
In the 1830’s, the pastor and congregation assisted in the formation of the Plattekill Reformed Church in Mount Marion, a church where Rev. Overbaugh also served as pastor for a time.
The pastor of our church for many years served a chapel built for the employees of the Ulster White Lead Company in Glenerie, and Immanuel Chapel, now St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, in Glasco.
While the stone house adjacent to our property once belonged to us, it served for a few years as the Tri-Parish Retreat, a place where people from inner-city New Jersey could bring a group to experience a weekend of fresh air and country living. The house is now residential.
In 1842, the women of the church organized “The Female Benevolent Association” to look after the interests of the church and to help the poor. The group has undergone many transitions over the years, including Ladies Aid and Missionary Societies, and is the great-grandmother of our present RCWM, or Women’s Guild which is still very active.
