Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church

Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church They settled on the west bank of the Brazos River about two and a half miles northeast of what is now Satin, Texas.

The church founders (who organized the church which became Cedar Grove Baptist Church) were brought to Falls County, Texas from Yazoo County, Mississippi by their Masters; Colonel Ruben Buhl and a Colonel London. They slaved for their masters until June 19, 1865 when they were freed. On August 20, 1865, just two months and one day after their emancipation, a few of these former slaves, including M

atilda London (then a teenage girl) and her mother, Sookie Buryer, assembled to worship God in public and to organize a church. As the section they lived in was then known as “Buhl’s Quarters” and Reverend Joe Moore became its first pastor. Among the sixteen (16) charter members were Sisters Matilda London, Salina King, Susan Buryer, Emma Graves, Emma Masters, and Brothers Bonnie Buryer and Ned Smith. The first baptizing was performed in the Brazos River on December 17, 1865. It was a cold, freezing day but the converts would not agree to delay their baptism. Theme: Different Doesn't Mean Deficient

There are different gifts but the same Spirit. God never intended everyone to function alike. As long as we are led by His Spirit lifting up our Lord Jesus - God will be pleased. Your difference isn't necessarily your weakness. It may reveal your assignment.

Reflect: Where have I compared myself with someone else's gifting?

Prayer: God, help me appreciate how You made me.

Challenge: Encourage someone whose strengths are different from yours.

GIFTED — DAY 1: BEFORE THE GIFT
Read: 1 Corinthians 12:1–3

Before Paul talks about gift, he addresses Lordship.

“…no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.” — 1 Corinthians 12:3

Before we ask, What is my gift? We must first ask, Who is my Lord?

Spiritual gifts are not about titles, attention, or platforms. They come from the Holy Spirit and are meant to glorify Jesus and strengthen His Body.

So our journey toward discovery begins with surrender.

Is Jesus Lord over my decisions?
My relationships?
My ambitions?
My service?
Even my gift?

If Jesus isn't Lord, eventually the gift can become about me.

PRAY
Jesus, You are Lord! Before I ask You to reveal my gift, I surrender myself to You. Holy Spirit, show me how You have gifted me so that my life can glorify Jesus and strengthen His Body. Amen. God, my answer is YES!

REFLECT
Is there any area of my life I have not fully surrendered to Jesus?

REMEMBER
Before DISCOVERY comes SURRENDER. Jesus is Lord!

Beginning September 7, Cedar Grove is starting a journey entitled:

GIFTED: Every Member. Every Gift. One Body.

God has placed something in you that the Body needs. Your gift matters. Your assignment matters. YOU matter.

But before we ask, “What is my gift?” there is a more important question: “Is Jesus Lord of my life?” Before we can discover what He has placed in us, we must surrender to His Lordship.

Over four weeks, we’re going into 1 Corinthians 12 to DISCOVER our gifts, UNDERSTAND their purpose, DEVELOP what God has placed within us, and DEPLOY our gifts for the strengthening of the Body. Over the next 4 weeks you will experience:

DAY 5 — MARRY THE SOURCE, NOT THE RESOURCE
📖 Read: 1 Kings 17:14–16

The widow’s barrel never became a warehouse. Her oil did not necessarily overflow everywhere.
Instead, every time she needed some...
there was some.
Yesterday—enough.
Today—enough.
Tomorrow—will be enough again.
That is Jireh.
Sometimes the miracle is not excess.
Sometimes the miracle is consistent replenishing.
Elijah learned that resources can change:
The brook dried.
The ravens stopped.
The location changed.
But the Source never changed.
So stop limiting God’s provision to the resource you can currently see.
MARRY THE SOURCE — NOT THE RESOURCE.
Resources change.
Seasons change.
People change.
Economies change.
But JIREH REMAINS.

💭 REFLECT:
Have I become more dependent upon the resource than the God who provided it?

🙏 PRAY:
Jireh, You are my Source. Help me trust You when resources change. Thank You for every way You have sustained, replenished, and carried me.

DAY 4 — MOVE BEFORE YOU SEE IT
📖 Read: 1 Kings 17:15

The Bible says:
“And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah.”
She moved before she saw anything change. The barrel was still low.
The oil was still scarce.
The drought was still happening.
Yet she obeyed. That is faith.
Faith does not always wait for evidence before moving.
Faith obeys while the barrel still looks empty.
Faith pours while there is still only a little oil. And here is the revelation:
WHEN YOU MOVE IN SCARCITY, THINGS BEGIN TO SHIFT.
Sometimes we are waiting on God to change the circumstances while God is waiting on us to obey His instruction.

REFLECT:
What have I delayed because I am waiting to see how everything will work out first?

PRAY:
God, give me courage to obey before I see the outcome. Let my confidence rest in Your character rather than my circumstances.

You may not see the provision yet—MOVE ANYWAY.

DAY 3 — SCARCITY EXPOSES PRIORITY
Read: 1 Kings 17:13–14

Elijah told the widow to follow God’s instruction before she saw the provision. That is difficult faith.
The issue was not a prophet exploiting a vulnerable woman. God was stretching her faith so she could survive what was threatening to destroy her.
Scarcity reveals what really matters.
Do we still pray when we are tired?
Do we still worship when we are disappointed?
Do we still serve when nobody notices?
Do we still give when money is tight?
Do we still obey when obedience becomes inconvenient?
Anybody can be faithful when things are overflowing.
But scarcity exposes priority.
We often ask God, When is my overflow coming?
Perhaps God is asking us, Can I trust you with it?

REFLECT:
Where does God rank when life becomes difficult?

PRAY:
Lord, teach me to put You first even when circumstances pressure me to do otherwise. Make me faithful with little so I can be trusted with more.
Faithfulness in little prepares us for greater.

DAY 2 — GOD WILL TEST YOUR TRUST
📖 Read: 1 Kings 17:10–12

The widow was already facing scarcity.
Water was scarce.
Food was scarce.
Hope was scarce.
Then Elijah asked her for the very things she barely had.
Why would God allow that?
Because trust becomes real when obedience touches the places where we feel most vulnerable.
It is easy to surrender what we don’t value. Faith gets tested when God touches our time, money, relationships, comfort, energy, or plans.
Sometimes God is not trying to take something from us. He is revealing what has control over us.
The question is not whether you have much.
The question is:
Can God trust you with what you have?

💭 REFLECT:
What area of scarcity makes it hardest for me to trust God?

🙏 PRAY:
Father, help me trust You even where I feel vulnerable. Remind me that what I possess is never greater than the God who provides.

Real faith says: God, even in this hard place, I trust You.

DAY 1 — WHEN THE BROOK DRIES
📖 Read: 1 Kings 17:7–9

The brook God sent Elijah to eventually dried up. That does not mean Elijah missed God. It does not mean God stopped providing. It simply meant the season had changed.
Sometimes we become so comfortable with the way God has provided that we resist the way God wants to provide.
Cherith was provision, but it was never Elijah’s permanent destination.
Some drying brooks are not punishment. They are transition.
A closed door may be pushing you toward a new assignment. A changing relationship, position, ministry, or opportunity may be God telling you to move.
Don’t become so attached to the brook that you miss Zarephath - someone needs you there!
Every lesson at the brook will prepare you for your next assignment. Your scars aren’t wasted!

REFLECT:
Is there something I am trying to preserve that God may be asking me to release?

PRAY:
Lord, give me discernment to recognize when a season has changed. Help me trust You enough to move when You say move.

Remember: The brook can dry, but Jireh never does.
