Located in the historical district of downtown Saratoga Springs New York, Temple Sinai is a progressive Reform synagogue that began in the early 1960's as a study group of a dozen families. Their love of learning nurtured a growing cadre of interested individuals and, in 1965, Temple Sinai was established as Saratoga's Reform synagogue. Since that time, the congregation has grown to include more t

han 170 families and individual members representing a diversity of life styles, professions and religious observances as well as an ever-widening geographic locale. Our congregation combines the benefits of both smaller and larger synagogues with its friendly, warm atmosphere, and programs that seek to meet the needs of the members as well as of the larger Jewish community. Our rabbis, Linda Motzkin and Jonathan Rubenstein serve not only as our spiritual leaders but are both skilled teachers and counselors and are active in local community and interfaith efforts.

We stand in solidarity with our Muslim siblings.

We are devastated. Today, gunmen opened fire at the Islamic Center of San Diego — killing three people in what appears to be a targeted act of hate. We grieve for the victims and their families.

No community should be targeted by violence. This is what happens when anti-Muslim rhetoric goes unchallenged — words have consequences. Together, we must change the way we dismantle hate and protect all of our communities.

A Novel recommendation from the library committee!

I’d heard the name of the novelist Amos Oz (1939-2018). I found him in our library upstairs (just turn left at the top of the stairs, then again … you can’t miss it). I read a lot of fiction and was drawn to A Tale of Love and Darkness by its very title. Tale … love … darkness. I picked it up and found that Oz had written an autobiography as the novelist he was … a colorful depiction of the Palestine he grew up in as a child and the new State of Israel he matured in: a melting pot of Eastern European refugees from a recovering Europe; early Zionists who had come to found an everlasting home for themselves and for generations to come; Jews from all over with wholly diverse traditions; Jewish intellectuals arguing over questions of the development of modern Hebrew and what the shtetl meant now in its destruction. Oz also tells about his grandmother who never stopped cleaning her surroundings and herself and cursing what she considered exotic insects lying in wait to attack. If you are drawn to the drama of a land in flux from day to day and at the same time a family living through it and the changes most of us experience, A Tale of Love and Darkness is for you.

Tonight, the religious school commemorated Yom HaShoah by making yahrzeit candles and writing the names of those who perished from Golcov Jenikov, the original home of our Czech Torah scroll. Zichronam livracha - may their memories be for a blessing.
