Do you work to protect the most vulnerable members of our society? Isaiah said that is part of faithfulness to the Lord.
“Your princes are rebels and companions of thieves. Everyone loves a bribe and runs after gifts. They do not bring justice to the fatherless, and the widow’s cause does not come to them” (Isaiah 1:23).
In condemning Judah’s leaders, Isaiah presented two moral expectations of God’s people. They were to flee corruption and care for the vulnerable. In Isaiah’s day, the most vulnerable comprised fatherless children and widows. They had no source of income or protection and needed God’s people to stand up for them. Today, orphans and widows remain vulnerable and need our protection. Yet there are additional vulnerable groups to consider: persons with disabilities, the unborn, children, recent immigrants, the poor, people nearing the end of life, and more. Every follower of Jesus cannot provide hands-on help to each of these groups. But each of us can give to ministries that care for them. Each of us also can take action to protect at least one of those groups. Caring for the vulnerable is not a bonus activity for super-Christians. It is an expectation of all Christians.
