We talk a lot about what it means to be "non-doctrinal," which is to say: no standard set of rules across Unitarian Universalism. We are "values-based," but that doesn't mean we operate in a silo. When we lean into "covenant," what exactly does that mean, and how do covenants work as a spiritual practice?

This moment calls us to build—and rebuild—our understanding of what it means spiritually to be neighbors and to engage in many forms of sacred community defense.

Ahead of this year’s national election in November, UU the Vote is offering Solidarity Summits for people across faiths to build the power and care networks we need to defend democracy and protect our communities.

These gatherings bring together Unitarian Universalists, people of faith across traditions, lay leaders, organizers, advocates, and community partners to strengthen regional networks, deepen relationships, and practice the kind of solidarity this moment demands.

Our communities come together in this time that holds elements of profound beauty and celebration - of joyful homecoming and new beginnings - alongside much that causes worry and understandable fear. It continues to be a painful time, with too many losses, and a level of violence that is sometimes too terrible to bear.

And I know to my bones that times like these are why we need religious community in the first place. We need a touchpoint, to live into the fullness of who and how we most want to be together in the face of all that is tender and impactful. And we can learn from one another, from each congregation’s unique history and context, and from the lifesaving ministries each of you offer in your communities.

We will face the unknown together, prepare for what may come, and support one another in staying accountable to the values we hold in common covenant. And in doing so, we will find the joy and the strength to meet this moment, together in community.

Beloveds, Unitarian Universalism is a tradition that brings the best of human care and goodness into the world. As we enter into another congregational year, with a world full of heartbreak and struggle, I remain grateful to be living into our shared values together with you. This year, my hope for us is that we continue to embrace a deep commitment to build for the future and for generations to come.

Here at the UUA, we rely on our relationships with you, and on your continued support, to elevate congregational life and advance our UU values in the world. Engaging with our programs is an important way to support our relational commitments with one another and there are some really wonderful, fresh offerings coming out this fall.

On behalf of our entire Unitarian Universalist Association, I bring you love and blessings as we move into this new congregational year. May we experience the sense of connection and care that comes with being part of a larger community, even as you each carry out your own essential and lifesaving ministries in your own communities.
