Tikkun Leyl Shavuot: Where You Go, I Will Go

Sacred Risk: Faith, Courage, and Covenant in Biblical Texts

The Book of Ruth highlights the risk and reward are essential components of covenantal relationships. In this session, we will utilize Ruth’s commitment to Naomi (“Wherever you go; I’ll go…[Ruth 1:16]”) as a framework for explorations of several additional biblical scenes of risk-taking including Hannah’s interactions with Eli in the Temple at Shiloh (1 Sam.1) the Binding of Isaac (Gen. 22), and when Pharaoh’s Daughter saves Moses (Ex. 2). What were biblical writers seeking to impart to their contemporaneous audiences? What can we learn from these ancient stories about the risk/reward of living in covenant today?

Still Becoming: The Spiritual Work of Not Having It Together

Between school calendars, laundry, carpools, work, meals, and the constant return to what needs care, life unfolds in time we do not fully control. The Omer is a Jewish practice of counting that time. Day by day, week by week. As it is written: “You shall count for yourselves seven complete weeks” (Leviticus 23:15). The Omer sits between Passover and Shavuot—between freedom and revelation, between what we have left behind and what is still ahead of us. And still, we count. We stay with time as it unfolds. This practice brings into focus something simple and consequential: what we attend to, what we return to, what we carry forward—these form the world we are making together. By the time we reach Shavuot, we are still here, still in relationship, still doing laundry, and still learning how to meet what we cannot fully prepare for. This session is a study and reflection on the Omer as a practice of becoming.
