From Pastor Greg: This Sunday we kick off a seven-week sermon series entitled Our Spiritual Family, based upon the stories of Abraham/Sarah, Isaac and Jacob/Esau found in Genesis. These stories are timeless because they reflect the reality of how messy relationships can be within families. Yet through faith and God's grace, these very flawed people become our spiritual ancestors who began the three Abrahamic faith traditions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. We begin with God’s call to Abram and Sarai to leave their home for a new, unknown land known as Canaan. “In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed,” God promises them (Genesis 12:1-9).

Following worship, we continue the Spiritual Family theme with our annual Preschool Spring Fair. Our campus will be filled with our preschool students and families as we celebrate the end of the school year. Let’s support this important ministry that has been serving our community since 1948 with our presence, service and gifts.

From Pastor Greg: In the church calendar, the Sunday following Pentecost is Trinity Sunday. This can be a little challenging because the doctrine of the Trinity – one God in three persons – is rather abstract and can be difficult to comprehend. It took centuries to develop this belief as theologians and bishops argued over the details in ecumenical councils. Yet the Trinity (Father/Son/Holy Spirit) is deeply ingrained in our liturgy to this day, including our creeds, prayers, and sacraments.

There are two opportunities to learn more about the Trinity in worship this Sunday. At our 10 a.m. service, we will hear Jesus’ final instructions to his disciples: the Great Commission (Mt 28:16-20). Our Reflect service at 5 p.m. will share it through a different story: the visit of the three angels to Abraham and Sarah (Gen 18:1-15). We will also use a famous Russian Orthodox icon to help with our reflection, along with sharing prayers, contemporary music, and Holy Communion. A shared meal and fellowship time follows.
