Ahavat Torah Ahavat Torah: A welcoming Jewish community in West Los Angeles: http://www.ahavattorahla.org/. Do you want to nourish your Jewish soul? Come, see for yourself!

Ahavat Torah is an exceptionally warm, welcoming Jewish community located in West Los Angeles. Here, each person’s presence is acknowledged and highly valued. The congregation was founded in 2003 and includes members from diverse backgrounds. Through adult programming and social gatherings, we have formed a community that comes together to worship, pray, learn, share meals, and support each other

through times of celebration and difficulty. Each week, congregants at Ahavat Torah have the opportunity to be part of the service and get close to the Torah. This congregation truly lives up to its motto of ~ ONE TORAH ~ MANY TEACHERS ~ ONE COMMUNITY ~ COMMITTED TO REPAIRING THE WORLD!” Our small size and simple structure make it easy for each voice to be heard. Our beloved teachers, Rabbi Miriam Hamrell and Rabbi Michal Morris Kamil, not only guides our lively discussions, but also inspires members to volunteer and offer their own teachings and interpretations. "This is a unique community where people can feel proud to be who are they are. Our Rabbis gives us the language to speak with each other about anything. We can be safe while being free to be genuine and open. That is how I feel a synagogue and a Jewish community should be.” A Member. Rabbi Miriam E. Hamrell MHL, M.Ed. (http://www.ahavattorahla.org/our-rabbi.html), has served as our religious and spiritual leader at Ahavat Torah Congregation and helped it grow since it was founded in 2003. She is loved for being a wise and compassionate leader who brings a remarkable variety of experiences and gifts to her calling as our Rabbi. Rabbi Miriam provides classes throughout the world on Jewish Ethics, the Spiritual and Inner Meaning of Prayer, Holy Days, Torah, Talmud, Mishnah, Conversion to Judaism, and advice on interpersonal relationships.

The Black History Month celebration, hosted by Ahavat Torah, was an unforgettable Shabbat service, filled with soul-stirring music, inspiring sermons, and profound moments of reflection. Rabbi Michal led the proceedings with pomp and ceremony, infusing the event with reverence and splendor.

The Instrumental Opening by Myk Price was spiritual and just beautiful and he was followed by Phil Bell's 'I See the Light' which was delightful and had everyone singing along. The choirs from both St Bede's Episcopal Church and First AME Church of Los Angeles, along with Ahavat Torah's Cantorial soloists Gary Levine and Kimberly Haynes, delivered breathtaking performances that captivated everyone. Led by AT's musical maestros Rev. Eli Lester, who performed 'Nishmati' as beautifully as always, Joel Warren who is a maestro on the piano, and Jeff Marder keeping the beat on drums perfectly, the event was a testament to the power of unity and shared purpose.

Pastor Carolyn Paskin Bell's sermon, 'Soaring in the Midst of Struggle' resonated deeply with attendees, offering inspiration and guidance, while Reverend Jennifer's intention for healing brought much needed words of wisdom, healing and hope.

The celebration was a beautiful expression of solidarity, reverence, and appreciation for the rich heritage and contributions of the Black community.

Several years ago our dear friends Arlene and Sid Rosenblatt created the first Tu Bishvat seder for Ahavat Torah. They had an illustrated Hagaddah which included the story of Tu Bishvat. songs, prayers, and meaningful descriptions. They selflessly took it upon themselves to do this yearly, providing for and setting tables with all the required fruits and nuts. We were delighted to honor their memory and dedication to tradition this year on Tu Bishvat.
Thank you Judy Kollack for the delicious and colorful seder plates.

What a magical afternoon! Our AT community came together this past Shabbat to celebrate Tu B'Shevat, starting with a short service lead by Rabbi Michal and Cantor Gary Levine, with AT’s musical maestros Joel Warren, Rev. Eli Lester and Jeff Marder.

After services lunch was served in the social hall and then the seder started with song led by Rabbi Michal with everyone joining in!

We paid tribute to Sid and Arlene Rosenblatt with beautiful cards created by Lynn Stevens. Sid and Arlene’s dedication to past Tu B’Shevat Seders are legendary and played a significant role in our community.

The Seder was filled with joyous moments, heartfelt conversations, songs and a shared commitment to preserving and nurturing the environment.

As we planted seeds and tasted the fruits of the season, we were reminded of the interconnectedness of all living things and the importance of sustainability.

Together, we created a memorable experience that will continue to inspire and unite us.

We are grateful for the delightful company of our guests at the seder whose presence added warmth and joy to the celebration, and we look forward to welcoming you again soon!

We also want to thank all participants who brought their delicious food contributions to share, and AT’s “Dream Team” led by Rabbi Miriam for the beautiful setting! Specifically Linda Schorin, Sally Hackman, Lynn Stevens and Arva Rose, for the beautifully decorated tables, Judy Kollack for the amazing & delicious Seder plates, Eli Lester and Phil Cantor, our musical maestros, for their accompaniment during the Seder, and of course Rabbi Michal for leading. Such a special day!
