A bit late, but we wanted to recognize our spiritual stewardship of the earth.

Today is World Environment Day. We give thanks for the appointment of the Most Revd Marinez Rosa dos Santos Bassotto, Primate of Brazil and Bishop of the Amazon, as Chair of the Anglican Communion Environmental Network (ACEN).

Archbishop Marinez, who is well known for her advocacy for the natural world and for Indigenous peoples and traditional communities in the Amazon, will attend ACC-19 as both Primate of Igreja Episcopal Anglicana do Brasil and Chair of ACEN.

Reflecting on her appointment, Archbishop Marinez said:

‘Churches cannot be mere observers of the climate crisis; we must be bridges for dialogue and agents of change.’

Food for thought.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally, has led a debate in the House of Lords on the human impact of Artificial Intelligence.

Archbishop Sarah described AI as a ‘remarkable product of human creativity’, but warned that it also raises urgent questions about human relationships, the future of work, democracy, truth and the protection of human dignity.

In her speech, she said:

‘Technology this revolutionary must not simply be unleashed on our societies: it must be developed with us and for us - at a human pace, with human objectives.

‘Above all, we must put people - our common, glorious humanity - ahead of profit, convenience or technological progress at all costs.’

The debate follows wider Christian reflection on AI, including Pope Leo XIV’s recent encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas. AI is also one of the major themes being explored by the Anglican Communion Science Commission, as it seeks to equip Anglicans for thoughtful and courageous leadership in science.

📅 On 5 June, the Anglican Communion Environment Network and the Anglican Peace and Justice Network are jointly hosting an online prayer meeting titled ‘Prayers of Lament and Hope: Restoring Peace with Creation’, to mark World Environment Day.

🌍 What is World Environment Day?
World Environment Day is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. This year’s theme, ‘A Global Call for Climate Action,’ calls on all to step in , and listen to the urgent signals the Earth is sending.

🙋 What can I expect from the event?
Join with Anglicans from around the world for scripture, meditation, music and prayers and to hear from the Rt Revd Ernesto Manuel (Bishop of Nampula in the Igreja Anglicana de Mocambique e Angola) and Amal Sarah (from the Renew Creation project, Church of Pakistan and Anglican Communion Youth Network).

This online prayer gathering is for anyone interested in learning about the links between conflict and damage to the environment and hearing from Anglicans engaged in peace-building in areas of social and environmental tension.
