🕇 HOLY SCRIPTURE for this Sunday's sermon: Hearts Made Glad

Psalm 33

1 Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous!
Praise befits the upright.
2 Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre;
make melody to him with the harp of ten strings!
3 Sing to him a new song;
play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.
4 For the word of the Lord is upright,
and all his work is done in faithfulness.
5 He loves righteousness and justice;
the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.
6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
and by the breath of his mouth all their host.
7 He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap;
he puts the deeps in storehouses.
8 Let all the earth fear the Lord;
let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!
9 For he spoke, and it came to be;
he commanded, and it stood firm.
10 The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
11 The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
the plans of his heart to all generations.
12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!
13 The Lord looks down from heaven;
he sees all the children of man;
14 from where he sits enthroned he looks out
on all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 he who fashions the hearts of them all
and observes all their deeds.
16 The king is not saved by his great army;
a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
17 The war horse is a false hope for salvation,
and by its great might it cannot rescue.
18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
on those who hope in his steadfast love,
19 that he may deliver their soul from death
and keep them alive in famine.
20 Our soul waits for the Lord;
he is our help and our shield.
21 For our heart is glad in him,
because we trust in his holy name.
22 Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
even as we hope in you.

SERMON REFLECTION QUESTIONS

1. What do the two parables in vv. 44-46 have in common? How do they differ?

2. What motivates the man (likely a farmer) in the first parable and the merchant in the second parable to sell everything and buy the one thing? Why is it vital to connect the motivation to the action?

3. How do these parables show how joy leads to sacrifice which then leads to gain? Why does the order of this matter? What does this order teach you about grace? Obedience? Hope?

4. V. 47 begins with the word "again" indicating that Jesus has taught on this subject before (cf. vv. 36-43). Why do you think Jesus is teaching again about the final judgment? How can we say that He is being loving and gracious in telling us about this?

5. What do you think it means that God's Kingdom is like a net in the way Jesus describes it here? In what sense does the coming of God's Kingdom produce a sobriety and seriousness in you? How might a passage like this prompt you to pray for yourself and for others?

6. Vv. 51 and 52 center on a scribe (a scholar of the Bible) who is "trained for the Kingdom of Heaven." Why is it vital to engage with the Bible through with an understanding of the Kingdom of Heaven? How might this produce treasure in your life and in the lives of others? How does being an active member in the church support this?

7. Pray that we would be gripped by a renewed joy in having found Jesus and it would produce in us a joyful, sacrificial, obedience.

HOLY SCRIPTURE for this Sunday's Sermon: "Bought, Sold, Swept Up"

Matthew 13:44-52
44 [Jesus said to them:] “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46 who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. 48 When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. 49 So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

51 “Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” 52 And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

SERMON REFLECTION QUESTIONS

1. Re-read the text. What does Jesus mean by the Kingdom of Heaven? How did his Jewish listeners understand that? How is that unexpected?

2. In what way is the Kingdom like a mustard seed? In what way is it like leaven? How does this challenge our assumptions?

3. How does Jesus' kingdom fulfill all prophecy in the Old Testament, and all promises? How does it reveal the mystery of God's plan to us?

4. How are these parables gospel grace and good news to us, especially when we feel insignificant and small? How can we share that with our neighbors?

HOLY SCRIPTURE for this Sunday's sermon:

Matthew 13:31-35

31 Jesus put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. 32 It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”
33 He told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.”

34 All these things Jesus said to the crowds in parables; indeed, he said nothing to them without a parable. 35 This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet:
“I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.”

"The kingdom of heaven is worth infinitely more than the cost of discipleship, and those who know where the treasure lies joyfully abandon everything else to secure it."
