We Met At Grossinger's

What began as a quaint boarding house ended up changing the face of American culture in ways no one could have predicted. - Forbes

Jennie Grossinger had a fierce commitment to build the family business into something special. Grossinger’s Catskills Resort Hotel blazed a trail the hotel business has followed ever since. At its height, the resort was the preeminent getaway for food, recreation, and entertainment. It was really the first all-inclusive resort experience.

Grossinger's reputation attracted a wide variety of comedians, athletes, and political figures, including Mel Brooks, Jackie Robinson and Eleanor Roosevelt. This nostalgic film tells the story of the iconic Catskills resort that served as the inspiration for the classic 1987 film Dirty Dancing. It's an immersive journey through the Catskills once known as the Borscht Belt.

In Europe during the Middle Ages Christian women covered their hair. During the 16th and 17th centuries wigs were worn by royalty, and associated with high status and high fashion. In the 60s and 70s the wig enjoyed a revival thanks in part to a large fashionista market.

Filmed in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Canada and Jerusalem, Sheitel traces the historical and spiritual roots of hair covering for married women in Judaism, its evolving interpretations, and its misconceptions. Scenes from Jerusalem reveal how head coverings act as markers of faith and empowerment not only for Jewish, but Christian and Muslim women as well. Additionally, the film offers a rare look into the global wig industry.

This past weekend, 7 incredible teens from our CBS USY chapter joined 140 peers from across the Far West region for the Far West USY Spring Convention in Rancho Bernardo.

From the moment our USYers boarded the train in Newhall to their arrival in San Diego, this was more than just a trip—it was a journey of connection, growth, and leadership.

We are so proud to share that our chapter was recognized with two regional awards for outstanding programming: one for our recent Our Big Kitchen initiative and another for the creation of our youth lounge. These honors reflect the creativity, commitment, and heart of our teens.

Even more exciting:

⭐Stav Klaus was named Far West USYer of the Year—an extraordinary and well-deserved recognition of her leadership and impact

⭐Kensi Cohen and Braydon Brown were elected to the Far West USY Los Angeles Regional Board, stepping into important leadership roles for the year ahead

These achievements are a powerful reminder that our teens aren’t just participating, they are leading, building, and shaping the future of the Jewish community.

We couldn’t be prouder of this group and all they represent. The future of our community is in very good hands!

Yesterday, our community came together for a deeply meaningful Yom HaShoah program organized by our CBS Men’s Club. We were honored to screen The Symphony of the Holocaust, the powerful survival story of world-renowned violin prodigy Shony Alex Braun, who miraculously survived four concentration camps with the help of his musical talent and later composed a symphony based on his experiences.

The film was followed by a moving live performance from members of the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony, including a violinist who performed on Braun’s actual violin, and a heartfelt Q&A with the musicians, the film’s director, and Braun’s granddaughter. It was an unforgettable program that left a lasting impact on all in attendance.

In remembrance of the six million who perished and in honor of the resilience of survivors, we invite you to mark Yom HaShoah tonight at sundown by lighting a Yellow Candle. If you need one, candles are available at CBS. As you light it, you may recite this prayer:

We light this Yellow Candle to rekindle G-d’s flame,
To shine His light upon the world once again,
To sanctify the memories of the millions of souls,
To honor their prayers and all their lost souls.
We bless their existence by being alive
To light this Yellow Candle as proof we survived.

May we never forget.
