In numerous cases that require justice, many have argued for emotional compensation through the death penalty. A closure that is so severe it requires human life as payment for the offense. In the fabric of human history, current society and even a variety of religious circles globally, there has always been a form of punishment that brought death upon the punishable.
Did you know that even the Bible has the death penalty? I’m not simply talking about the Old Testament, but also the New Testament! How do we reconcile God’s love, when God’s justice can be ever so severe?
Perhaps the issue isn’t with God at all. Perhaps the issue lies in the fact that mankind has fallen so short of the standard of holiness in which he was originally created, that we have incriminated God instead of ourselves. We’ve dismissed sin for a twisted morality and have continually excused ourselves and those WE deem worthy of grace, rather of weeping, groaning and seeking God with genuine repentance.
Simply put: If we are not weeping, groaning and repenting of sin in this life, we will be weeping and groaning with no hope for repentance in the life to come.
What if I told you, that everyone in this room has sinned in such a way, that the death penalty would be God’s justice toward us.
So if it’s really this bad; if we are really all deserving of this then why has God allowed us to remain? One word: Love. The measure of God’s love is so deep, that the scripture emphatically declares this to us:
JOHN 3:16-21 (NIV)
“16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.”
The love of God is to tell us of anything that can harm us, hurt us or lead us to death presently and eternally. Therefore, God sent His Son, our beloved Lord Jesus to save us from the death penalty! The reason being because of Romans 3:23 which states, “23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”These 2 scriptures summed up by the 3rd in Romans 6:23 “23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” All of this bring us to our opening statement, found within 1 John 5:16 which states: “There is a sin the leads to death…”
