St. Monica is best known as the mother of St. Augustine, the author of Confessions and a great Doctor of the Church. While St. Augustine was in his wayward youth, St. Monica persevered in prayer, fasting, and tears for her son. Once, while she was worried about her son’s salvation, she was famously comforted by a bishop: “The child of those tears shall never perish.” Her witness has comforted and inspired millions of mothers for thousands of years.

Pope Benedict wrote of her, “St. Monica is the symbol of all mothers who never give up hope, who never tire of praying for their children’s return to God.”
