Tuesday Saint of the Day – Saint Ephrem

Our saint of the day is Saint Ephrem who died in the year 373 at the age of 67 and here is his story.

Saint Ephrem was born around the year 306 in what is now modern-day Turkey, and he became one of the greatest theological writers and poets the Church has ever known. He is a Doctor of the Church and is sometimes called the Harp of the Holy Spirit because of the beauty and depth of his writing. He used hymns and poetry as a way to teach the faith, a brilliant and creative approach at a time when many people could not read.

Ephrem spent most of his life as a deacon, never becoming a priest or a bishop, yet his influence on the Church was enormous. He wrote hundreds of hymns — some scholars say as many as four hundred — covering the mysteries of the faith, the life of Christ, and the mercy of God. He had a special devotion to Mary, the Mother of God, and wrote some of the earliest Marian hymns in the history of the Church.

Late in his life, he moved to Edessa and lived as a monk in a cave outside the city. When a great famine struck, Ephrem left his solitude and organized relief for the poor, even turning public baths into makeshift hospitals. He died shortly after, around the year 373, worn out from caring for others.

Scripture tells us, "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord" (Psalm 150:6). Ephrem praised God with every breath, every word, and every hymn he ever wrote. May we find our own voice to praise God this week.

See you at Mass.

It Was a Happening
By Deacon Jeff Claar

Friends, our Sandusky Catholic family experienced something truly beautiful this past Sunday at the 9:00AM Mass at St. Mary’s.

In the social sciences, they call it a “happening” — a moment when a community gathers with such shared joy, gratitude, and meaning that it becomes more than an event. It becomes an experience that marks us, unites us, and reminds us who we are.
That is exactly what happened as we celebrated Fr. Phil Feltman’s 60th anniversary of his ordination as a Catholic priest.

Over 600 people filled the church to capacity. More than 300 stayed for the breakfast reception. And Fr. Phil stood for over two hours so he could greet every single person who came to honor him. It was a living image of the good shepherd among his flock.
For me, it was also personal. Fr. Phil has been my pastor, my mentor, and my friend. Thirty years ago, he took a chance on a young man and hired me to be the business manager for St. Mary’s. We served side by side at St. Mary’s Sandusky for 15 years before his retirement to senior status. I learned from him not only how to manage a parish, but how to serve one. His priesthood shaped my diaconate. His friendship shaped my life.

If you were not there, and would like to send a note to Fr. Phil Feltman, you may do so:

Many commented that the homily he preached that day was one of the best they have ever heard, and I agree. “Masterful” was the word our pastor used to describe it. With Fr. Phil’s permission, I share it here with you in gratitude for the man who has given his whole life to Christ and His Church. Enjoy!
