General Assembly Business Session, Saturday, July 29, 2023
My impressions on the Saturday Business session.
Many of the resolutions were pretty straight forward, with most being reports. There were three, however, that stood out.
GA-2339 Compelled to Witness: Answering the Cry of our Palestinian Siblings
This is a “Sense of the Assembly” resolution. During the discussion period, a few spoke in favor of this resolution, and one person was under the impression that the Palestinians were the aggressors. The vote was overwhelming in support of the resolution. While there were a handful of dissenters, only one stepped up during the discussion in opposition of the resolution.
GA-2343 Amendments to the Design of the Christian Church
This is an Operational/Policy/Organizational resolution. This proposed changing the frequency and access to the General Assembly from a bi-annual in person event to a hybrid tri-annual event with an online event in the off years. It also calls for the extension of the term of the current General Minister and President (Rev. Dr. Teresa Owens) to 8 years in order to sync up with the new schedule which would start in 2027.
There was a lot of discussion on this. Various motions to commit this resolution to further study were made but failed to pass. Some were hoping that the resolution would change the definition of “Clergy” to go beyond the confines of congregational ministries (e.g. chaplaincy, neighborhood ministry, etc.) Many agreed with this concept, but most felt that this was not addressing the focus of the resolution and that a separate resolution should be submitted to the General Board.
The resolution passed with a majority vote.
GA-2341 Calling the Church to Oppose Christian Nationalism
This is a “Sense of the Assembly” resolution. During the discussion, one person expressed that this goes against our culture of inclusivity, of accepting all people no matter their beliefs. Another person provided this perspective: he was both a Christian and a patriot and that the DOC has its beginnings in the forming of the nation, therefore he sees himself as a Christian Nationalist. Many spoke about the white supremist culture behind the Christian Nationalist Movement and how it is turning many unchurched and dechurched people away from all religion. Some feel that we have an obligation to let the world know that Christian Nationalism is not the same as Christianity and that we should be the role model to provide hope to all who seek a church that believes in inclusivity and the love of God. This resolution was passed overwhelmingly with one loud but single vote against it.
