The Archdiocese of San Francisco mourns the loss of Bishop Patrick Joseph McGrath. A native of Dublin, Bishop McGrath was ordained in 1970 in Waterford, Ireland, to serve in the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

Bishop McGraw served at St. Anne of the Sunset Church and as Rector and Pastor of St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral. He also served in the Archdiocesan Tribunal Office and Office of Faith Formation, among others.

He was consecrated a bishop by Archbishop John Quinn and served as Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco from 1989 until 1999. In June 1998, Pope Saint John Paul II appointed Bishop McGrath to be the second bishop of the Diocese of San Jose.

We pray for Bishop McGrath, his family, the Diocese of San Jose, and all who knew and worked with him.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and all the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

From Bishop Cantú: “Bishop P. J. McGrath has been placed in Hospice Care. After surgery to repair a spinal disk after a recent fall, he developed pneumonia. He has not been able to overcome the pneumonia, given other health complications. I was able to visit and pray with him today, offering him the anointing of the sick and Holy Communion. He asks for your prayers for a peaceful transition to the Lord’s house. He is very much at peace, and awaits the arrival of his family from Ireland.”
