CCSM Sermon for June 7, 2026
Rev. Álvaro Durán - "After the End of the World"
https://youtu.be/3p-dNjHc_dk

Drawing on the story of Abram's call to leave everything familiar, Rev. Álvaro Durán explores the biblical meaning of apocalypse not destruction, but revelation. Through the experiences of LGBTQ+ communities, migration, rejection, condemnation, loss, resilience, continuous struggle for justice and unshakable hope, this sermon reflects on what becomes possible when old certainties collapse and hidden truths come to light.

What wisdom do q***r voices offer the Church in a time of fear, division, and change? And what might God be calling us to leave behind so that we can journey more faithfully into the future?

A sermon about courage, community, and the conviction that after every ending, God is still with us and calling us to unimagined futures.

Genesis 12: 1-9

The Holy One said to Abram: Leave your homeland, your relatives, and the household that has shaped you, and go to the land that I will show you. I will help you become a great people. I will bless you and make your name known, so that you may be a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you, and I will oppose those who seek to harm you. Through you, all the families, peoples, and communities of
the earth will find blessing."

So Abram set out as God had directed, and Lot traveled with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. He took Sarai, his spouse, Lot, his nephew, all the possessions they had gathered, and all the members of their household who were with them in Haran, and together they journeyed toward the land of Canaan. When they arrived in Canaan, Abram traveled through the land as far as Shechem, to the sacred oak of Moreh. At that time, the Canaanite people lived in the land.

Then the Holy One appeared to Abram and said: "To your descendants and to the generations that come after you, I will give this land." There Abram built an altar to the God, who had appeared to him. From there he moved into the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel to the west and Ai to the east. There he built another altar and called upon the name of God. Then Abram continued his journey, moving from place to place toward the Negeb.

How did Matthew 28 become the theological backbone for the 15th-century Doctrine of Discovery?

Rev. Jessica unpacks this misused text—and explores the true, communal heart of the “Great Commission”. We are called to mutual care, not conquest.

Rev. Jessica Vacketta - "Misused, Reclaimed"

Matthew 28: 16-20, the "Great Commission," is one of the most misused texts in Christian history. It became the theological backbone of the Doctrine of Discovery, justifying conquest, colonization, and the decimation of indigenous peoples, and its logic is still at work today in White Christian Nationalism. But this text is really about something else entirely: the relational, communal heart of a Triune God who calls us not to conquer, but to mutual care.

Matthew 28: 16-20

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him, but they doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
