In Genesis 18-19, Abraham pleads with God on behalf of the city. Although Abraham’s household included more than ten people when you count everyone connected to him, not all were found righteous. Even Lot’s sons-in-law were given the chance to escape but ignored the warning.
Today, many of us have people in our lives, within our homes or circles, who may not be like-minded in faith. They may appear godly on the surface, but lack true spiritual depth. Judas, for example, walked closely with Jesus and witnessed His divinity firsthand, yet he still failed to discern, or perhaps didn’t care, who Jesus truly was. He allowed his flesh to overpower his spirit. Judas, too, had a form of godliness but denied its power.
The Bible also reminds us to seek wise counsel when it comes to decision making. Proverbs 11:14 says, “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.” But what happens when the people in your house or your inner circle aren’t walking in alignment with God’s truth? How can they steer you in the right direction if they themselves are lost or spiritually compromised? Before you accept advice, you must ask: Do you really know who you’re connected to? Do you trust the counsel you’re receiving and more importantly, does it align with God’s Word? Not every voice deserves influence, not every connection is divine, and everyone can’t go with you!
