From the Desk of Rabbi Weingarten,
ב״ה
Dear Friends,
This morning, the Jewish world awoke to the horrific news of a terror attack targeting the Jewish community as they gathered to celebrate Chanukah and light the Menorah on Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia.
Our hearts are broken for the families who lost loved ones and for all those injured, and we extend our sincerest and heartfelt condolences to our sons preschool teacher Chaya Shlanger who's uncle, Rabbi Eli Schlanger, was one of 11 people brutally murdered in this heinous attack.
We ask the community to join us in prayers and good deeds for the son of our colleagues at Texas A&M university, Rabbi Leibel Lazaroff (Yehuda Leib ben Manya), who was shot during the attack. He is currently in the ICU and urgently needs our prayers, blessings, and acts of merit. Leibel was helping manage the Chanukah event for Chabad of Bondi when the attack occurred.
We join our brothers and sisters in Sydney ask around the world in grief, in prayer, and in unwavering solidarity.
It is natural, in moments like these, to feel shaken. But Chanukah was never meant to be celebrated only when the world feels safe and calm. In fact, Chanukah was born in uncertain times. It is completely understandable that this news has heightened concerns about safety, especially as we prepare to gather on almost every night of Chanukah for our joyous Chanukah celebrations in the Texas Corridor.
Your safety is our highest priority. We are taking every measure possible to ensure that every Chanukah event this week is safe, secure, and protected. We are grateful to Chief Matt Carmichael at the University PD who has already been in touch with law enforcement in the area and in discussions to secure upgraded and enhanced security for our community's Chanukah celebrations. Chief Matt has assured me that the UPD and or SMPD, NBPD will be out in force to protect our community during this week of Chanukah and beyond.
Tonight there will be a public Menorah lighting at the Main Plaza in New Braunfels at 5:30pm
Tuesday 5:30pm we will be Lighting the Menorah at the Wimberley Square
Wednesday at 5:30pm we will be hosting our San Marcos Menorah Lighting at the Historic Court House on the Square. Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra will be joining as well.
All of the Chabad events will have an extra measure of security present.
What happened at Bondi Beach was meant to intimidate. Instead it reminded us of who we are. Jews have always answered darkness with light. We cannot and will not allow the darkness of terrorism to extinguish the light of our Chanukah celebrations. Now more than ever it is critical that we stand tall, strong and together. Let us gather in greater numbers with increased strength and light to make this Chanukah bigger and brighter than ever before.
Wishing you and your family a bright, uplifting and safe Chanukah!
With a heavy heart and strengthened resolve.
