"I’m all for unity and civility, but nowhere does the hope for unity call us to ignore the mistreatment—or even the threatened mistreatment—of the weaker members in our society. To sit by while immigrants and people of color are abused—where freedoms of love and faith are eroded—to sit by and watch without active resistance is to be conformed to the pattern of this world. Don’t do it. There’s a better way."

That's from an old message of Pastor John’s on Romans 12:1-2. Today John and Shelley are trying to live up to these words, representing the Central Coast along with 1200 other pastors and faith leaders from all over the country. To learn more or to livestream the event, check out:

"I am coming to feel that the people of ill will have used time much more effectively than the people of goodwill. We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the vitriolic words and actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence of the good people. We must come to see that human progress never rolls in on wheels of inevitability. It comes through the tireless efforts and persistent work of men and women willing to be co-workers with God, and without this hard work, time itself becomes an ally of the forces of social stagnation. We must use time creatively, and forever realize that the time is always ripe to do right. Now is the time to make real the promise of democracy, and transform our pending national elegy into a creative psalm of community. Now is the time to lift our national policy from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of human dignity."

Just in case you're wondering, here's what Christmas was all about.

One reason Jesus was born human.

An Advent thought from an old message of Pastor John's.

"Jesus came to draw us together in a new way of life—to show us how to live intertwined with each other and with him, just as he talks about being intertwined with his Father. Why talk about all this at Christmas? Because the mission of God as we see it Jesus the Messiah is the same mission we’re given as the Body of Christ: 'May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.'"

Assistance for needy families ends today. You can help bridge the gap through support of our local food bank. This is what it means to "love your neighbor."

Thank you for your commitment to nourishing our neighbors facing this crisis. Community is not built by accident, and ours would not be the same without your hard work and deep care.
