Keepers of the Glory by Rev. Gwen Hanssen
“Chapter 6 FASHION VERSUS TRUTH
At this point, you may be asking, "What does the life of a Keeper of the Glory look like?" Firstly, the glory of God will not be manifest in our lives if we are busy promoting our flesh - dressing and adorning in such a way that screams, "Look at me!" We are not called to have others swoon over our flesh. We are called to proclaim His great Name, and in doing so, the flesh must take a back seat to the first, so to speak, which is Him! He cannot shine through flesh that is self-promoting. His glory and beauty can only shine brightly through a life that has emptied self of 'self'.
Secondly, the glory of God will not be manifest in our lives if we are following hard after the latest trends and fashions, whilst allowing the world to dictate how much or how little we put on or off (i.e., how high or low hemlines, necklines, sleeve lines will be; how tight we wear our clothes; how we style our hair; or just how we present ourselves in general). Our measuring stick should not be culture, but rather the timeless Word of God.
Culture follows the trends of Hollywood and that which is paraded on the latest fashion runways.
Remember, Romans 12:2 begins with the words,
"Be not conformed to this world." It really just doesn't get any plainer than that.
We, as God's people, have no business whatsoever following the shallowness, fickleness, and nonsense that comes from people who have no sense of God and His Word whatsoever. Fashion is an industry designed to promote 'self. God's Word instructs us to do exactly the opposite. Put 'self' down, crucify 'self in order to have more of Him.
We can never and will never grow to the heights and depths in God by having one foot in the world, and one foot in the Church. As I have said before, it just doesn't work this way. This produces a hybrid seed - a mixture. Take some time to study in the Word what God thinks of hybrid seed. For the purpose of not veering off course here, I will just tell you that He does not look favorably on it. He wants those with a single eye.
The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light (Matthew 6:22).
It all comes down to one thing - who and what are we going to bow ourselves down to? Self? The fashion industry?Hollywood? Or are we going to remain with a single eye and bow down in humble submission to serve our Creator, and follow His ways and His patterns instead of following the patterns that are made and concocted by men who are in the business of promoting 'self'. There are many principles and scriptures in the Word that instruct us to bow down low before God, that we may ascend into the heights and be all that He has called us to be. Without a doubt, the way up is down. In embracing this principle, we can fully belong to Him as we guard and protect Truth.
And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts (Galatians 5:24).
In having said all of that, let's look at how Hollywood and fashion runways have influenced our culture. They have taught us to undress, paint our faces, tattoo our bodies, decorate ourselves with jewels, cut our hair (given to women as a covering and weapon in prayer), and truly, the list goes on. There is a myriad of ways that humanity has been taught to defile their temples, all while mainstream makes it appear so normal.
We are living in a generation that has drifted far away from Biblical standards and principles of separation. Today, these things are viewed as outdated and old-fashioned. But in spite of this ideology, I have a passion to speak up because I love and care for the souls of my precious brothers and sisters who are earnestly seeking for the pathway of Truth. Above all, I care the very most about guarding, protecting, and defending the timeless Truth of God's Holy Word. We should always seek to make our choices based on God's approval rather than the approval of man. At the end of it all, if we are walking in the footsteps of Jesus, we will not be popular.
And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved (Matthew 10:22).
Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it (Matthew 7:14).”
