Our song highlight this week is "For the Cause." The song calls us to Christ’s magnificent cause that we may be faithful in our bold proclamation of the Gospel so that many would put their faith in Christ and be saved. It is a call to proclaim good news of great joy that Christ has come and reconciled mankind to God through His great sacrifice on the cross. Through His death and resurrection, those imprisoned can be set free, those in turmoil can find peace, and those who are dead can be made alive. It is for this magnificent cause of the Gospel that we ought to say with hymn writer:

“Let it be my life’s refrain: To live is Christ, to die is gain,
empty myself, take my cross and follow the Son.”

Our whole life is called to this cause of Christ. Christ came to redeem us and save us when we were dead in our sins. Because of this, we go and proclaim His name so that many may hear, trust, believe, and be saved as well. Christ’s Church is called to this work until he comes again in glory. So until He comes again, we go for our King.

This Sunday is our fourth-and-final week in Proverbs. Over the past few weeks, we've had an opportunity to consider some of the book's major themes together: we heard the sages teach on wisdom itself, and then we received their wisdom on wealth, work, marriage, and s*x. This week, we'll listen to what they say about speech. Depending on how you count, roughly one out of every five to six verses in the book of Proverbs touches on speech. We won't read them all (that would take awhile!), but we'll explore several of their insights together. Your speech is very powerful––more powerful than you probably think. When it comes to using your tongue, there's ample room for each of us to experience growth, conviction, and encouragement. Join us for our last Sunday with the sages, as we hear what they say about how to use (and not use) this great power. Soli Deo Gloria!

Preparation Questions: Proverbs 10:19-21

1. Relative to other people, how much do you talk? How wise do you think this is?

2. How good are you at speaking gently to people? (Think about a recent attempt to resolve a conflict, persuade someone, or share the gospel)

3. If you asked your family or friends, how much would they say you talk about yourself?

4. According to verse 21, what should your lips be used for? What do you think this means, and how much do you do it?

This song was written quite recently by Matt Boswell and Matt Papa on their latest album together "Almost Home." "The Everlasting Love of God" is not just another Christian radio song talking about how God loves us, but rather Boswell and Papa write specifically how the Triune God loved His elect before the foundation of the world, how His love is ever with us now, and how we will dwell in the love of the Trinity for all of eternity. They no doubt had Ephesians 1:4b-6 in mind as they wrote this: “In love He predestined us for adoption to Himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of His will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved." (ESV)

At times, we often (myself included) take the simple, glorious truth’s of the scripture such as “God loves me” for granted and pass right over them in our times of study. And one may say, “well of course He does ‘Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so.’” For those who have been in the church a while, we have heard about the love of God towards sinners many times so that it just comes and goes without much thought. But this truth is absolutely mind shattering! This truth that the God of the universe, creator or all things, glorious and majestic, wise and splendid, powerful and just, merciful and mighty, eternal and unchanging, the Lord of hosts, this God would love us, enemies and haters of God, dead dogs, vile worms, dead in sins and transgressions. And He doesn’t just love us, but He then restores us and makes us new in Him. And we’re not just restored, but given the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ. And if that weren’t enough, we get to be caught up in the love that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have been enjoying for all of eternity. The only response we can have is with Charles Wesley in his hymn when he says “Amazing Love! How can it be? That Thou, my God, should die for me?” How can it be? It can be through the loving election of the Father, the loving sacrifice of the Son, and the love of the Spirit that seals our redemption.

Two weeks ago, we considered the teaching of Proverbs on the nature and value of wisdom itself. Last week, we explored its wisdom concerning wealth and work. This week, we turn to the sayings of the sages on marriage. Proverbs gives both a sobering warning against the deadly path of the adulteress and a beautiful portrait of the excellent wife. One leads to ruin; the other brings profound blessing. For unmarried men, do you know what kind of wife Proverbs calls you to seek? For women, do you know the kind of wisdom and character you should strive to cultivate? And for all of us, do we understand God’s design for s*xuality and covenant commitment? Come ready to be blessed this weekend by another Sunday with the sages. Soli Deo Gloria!
