Pun Pchum Bun is a major 15-day religious festival in which Khmer people pay respects to the past generations of their ancestors. The festival begins on the 15th day of the 10th month of the Khmer calendar. Around the world, families gather at pagodas to pray, bring food, and make offerings to monks and the spirits of their relatives.

During the first 14 days of the 15-day long Pun Pchum Bun religious festival, Khmer people bring food and offerings to monks and pray for the spirits of their departed relatives. In Cambodia, three days in October at the end of the festival are designated as public holidays so people have time to gather with family.

This weekend, we will be celebrating the 15th and final day of the Pun Pchum Bun festival with a traditional ceremony meant to show dedication, respect, and generosity to ancestors, friends, and family who are no longer with us. We are honored to carry on our culture with this longstanding practice, as we welcome members and their families to join us.

Happy Khmer New Year!

Khmer New Year, or Chol Chnam Thmey, takes place in mid-April to honor spring and the start of the year. The holiday is celebrated at Watt Kampuchea Krom with peaceful reflection, purification ceremonies, visits from families, and traditional games to mark the end of harvest season. At home, families do their spring cleaning and may set up altars to honor Buddhist deities and deceased family members. Temples are decorated with coconut leaves and flowers, offerings of food are laid out at altars for departed relatives, and people of all ages play traditional games in the temple courtyard.

We hope you all have a wonderful new year.
