Ahead of the 500th anniversary of the Guadalupan event in 2031, bishops from Mexico, the United States, and Canada gathered in Mexico City for a fraternal meeting and prayer at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Bishop Daniel E. Flores of Brownsville and Vice President of the USCCB, Bishop Oscar Cantú of San José, Bishop Eugenio Lira Rugarcía of Matamoros, and Bishop Pierre Goudreault of Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière and President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, were among those present.

The bishops carried home tilmas as part of the Novena Guadalupana Intercontinental, a preparation across the Americas leading to 2031. Each diocese will receive a tilma, a third-class relic, for enthronement in its cathedral, followed by two years of missionary activity and catechesis as the image travels to parishes beginning in 2027.

CARE OF CREATION | As we begin the Season of Creation, let us take time to read and reflect on the message of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV for the 11th World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation.

Pope Leo invites us to contemplate the gift of life and to cherish the earth that sustains it, recognizing that caring for creation is a tangible way of offering praise to our Creator. He also calls us to respond to the plea for peace and healing arising from our wounded world.

As we journey through this Season of Creation, let us allow our hearts to be renewed—so that we may become instruments of peace, healing, and hope, and faithful stewards of our common home.

Bishop Andres Ligot, our auxiliary bishop, is in Rome participating in the Annual Formation Course for New Bishops, organized by the Vatican’s Dicastery for Bishops. This year’s theme is: “In Christ, Guardians of the ‘Magnifica Humanitas’ in Times of Transformation.”
The course provides new bishops with an opportunity for prayer, reflection, formation, and fraternity as they deepen our understanding of the episcopal ministry and the mission entrusted to us by the Church.
One of the greatest blessings of this gathering is simply being together with brother bishops from so many nations, cultures, languages, and local Churches. It is a beautiful reminder of what we profess every Sunday: “I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.”
Please keep all new bishops in your prayers during these days of formation. May the Lord help us to become ever more faithful shepherds after the Heart of Christ, guardians of the dignity and beauty of every human person and servants of the communion and mission of His universal Church.

Pope Leo XIV began the five-week Season of Creation by calling on the faithful to step away from the frenzy of daily life to “hear the melodious voice of creation,” stressing that “it is not yet too late” to repair humanity’s relationship with the environment.

Celebrating Mass Sept. 1 in the gardens of the papal villa and the Borgo Laudato Si’ ecology project in Castel Gandolfo, the pope said contemplating creation and its Creator should lead people to recognize their responsibility for protecting it.
