San Gabriel Mission

San Gabriel Mission Mission San Gabriel Arcángel - the 4th of 21 California Historic Landmarks. In that year, the Mission moved to its present site.
(329)

The 4th of California's 21 Missions, had its beginning on September 8, 1771, near the present city of Montebello. The Mission, built of stone, brick, and mortar, is one of the best-preserved of all the Mission, with its picturesque buttresses and lofty walls. Since no depictions, paintings, or records existing regarding the original roof on the current Church, it can be assumed that it had a barre

l vaulted roof. It is believed that an earthquake in 1804, and another which sheared the bell tower away from the north wall in 1812, caused the Franciscan Friars to remove the barrel vaulted roof and engineer something different. The first photo archive of the wood shingle, pitched roof appears around 1868-1875 and accounts for the introduction of the false ceiling inside the Mission. Juan Bautista de Anza completed the first land link with Sonora, Mexico when he arrived on March 22, 1774, with an exploring party, and returned with a group of 240 colonists bound for San Francisco in 1776. Fifty years later, the first of the famous mountain men, Jedediah Smith, with a party of trappers, blazed a trail across the desert. Given a reception, Smith called “Old Father Sanchus” (Padre Sánchez) his “greatest friend.” After that, many overland parties visited the renowned Mission. The bond of San Gabriel with the city of Los Angeles dates from the exodus of eleven families escorted by a company of soldiers who crossed the Los Angeles River, and nine miles west of the Mission founded Pueblo de Nuestra la Reina de Los Angeles de Porciuncula. The Claretian Missionaries have remained as stewards of Mission San Gabriel Arcángel since 1908 and continue to serve the community through the two Churches, two cemeteries, elementary and high schools, Christian Service Center, and a convent.

11.2.25 / ALL SOULS DAY
Today, we honor and pray for our loved ones who are no longer with us physically.
We pray that they may be found in God's great glory and interceding for us.
We pray for the souls in purgatory to be purified and join the triumphant church.

Halloween

Question:
Is Halloween a pagan holiday or a Catholic one?

Answer:
The short answer: nowadays, a little bit of both. But it wasn’t always that way. Halloween and All Saints’ Day are closely connected. In the 800s, the Catholic Church began celebrating All Saints’ Day. It was originally called All Hallow’s Day or Hallowmas. The celebration began early on All Hallows’ Eve. But if Halloween is really about the saints in all their victorious glory, where do we get haunted houses, costumes, and pranks?

All Saints’ Day became associated with the other deceased rather quickly. November 2nd is All Souls Day, where we pray for the souls in purgatory. Throughout the European world, especially with the Celtic and Germanic peoples, the dead were honored in the autumn months. The Celtic pagan celebration of Samhain had its own folk rituals and occurred around the same time as these Catholic feast days.

Within the last few hundred years, this included dressing in disguise and going door to door, asking for food in exchange for a rhyme or poem. Some people masqueraded as “dark” spirits and pulled pranks on others. Today’s celebration of Halloween tends to take on these later practices, rather than the original meaning of celebrating the saints. But remember … this feast was Catholic first!

10.26.2025 / Gospel Luke 18:9-14

In today’s gospel, we hear the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. Both men were at the temple to pray. The first boosted his own reputation, while the other humbled himself before God.

What can we learn from these two men? What is Jesus trying to tell us?

Jesus says, “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted” (Luke 18:14). Jesus is calling us to humility. We must be humble and obedient to God. Daily, we must also reflect on our actions and strive to be better versions of ourselves as we are called to be perfect as our heavenly father is perfect” Matthew 5:48.

“Thinking you are not a sinner is very dangerous. Confession keeps us humble”.
