Jesus tells us that God wants us to produce fruits that contribute to building up the kingdom of God. In fact, Christ says that the kingdom will be taken away from us if we hoard and do not contribute. Are we contributing fruits that are building the kingdom? What are these fruits?

A letter from Stephen Karr:

Dear friends of Music at COS,

With choral music on indefinite hiatus since the COVID-19 pandemic struck and in-person worship inside the church building not possible for the time being, the Rector has decided to end my employment at the Church of Our Saviour. It has been my pleasure to serve you since Advent Sunday of this liturgical year, and I am sorry that my last Sunday with the choir came so quickly after my first. I am tremendously proud of the work we did together, especially for the compressed timeline before Christmas, and am sorry not to have the opportunity to grow with them further.

The parish has formed a committee to determine next steps for music at COS. If you wish to have your voice heard regarding the shape of the parish's music program in the coming years, or have any inquiry regarding the progress of these discussions, please contact the Rector and the committee members directly. If you wish to keep in touch with me, please send me a friend request on Facebook or follow my professional page.

Farewell,

Stephen Karr

For those of you who enjoyed this morning’s Canticle from the COS Virtual Choir, here is a peek behind the scenes of how recordings like this are made. Many thanks to Christopher Gravis, Canon for Music at St. John’s Cathedral in Los Angeles for publishing a look at how virtual choirs are assembled, piece by piece. You’ll also see an appearance from our semi-regular soloist during this period of online worship, Hannah Waldman, who happens to be married to Stephen Karr, the interim music director and organist. Hannah is normally a staff singer in the cathedral choir.

An explanation of how we've been adding music into our online services at St. John's Cathedral during this time of social distancing.

Please click here to read Fr. Jeffrey Stoller Thornberg's letter to the parish regarding operational adjustments in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. We will be live streaming Morning Prayer at 7:45 (Rite I) and 10:15 (Rite II) for the next three Sundays. The choir will go on hiatus, and will plan to resume choral Eucharist on Palm Sunday (April 5). While we are sorry to put aside the choral music we had begun preparing, our top priority should be to minimize the spread of the virus and to keep our community healthy. We will post the link to the stream on this page, and urge you to tune in from home if you feel it is necessary to stay away from gatherings at this time. We offer our continued prayers for the health of our parish, our nation and our world.
