rev. hannah is in St. Louis this week with the National Association of Episcopal Christian Communities. We’re grateful to gather in prayer, conversation, and learning together—especially as we engage the urgent and ongoing reality of Christian nationalism with our speaker, Bishop Allen Shin, Suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of New York.

Christian nationalism is not new. While it is deeply present in the United States today, its historical and ideological roots stretch back as far as Christianity under Constantine in fourth-century Rome, when faith became increasingly intertwined with empire and political power. In the United States, this merging of religious and national identity has long been used to justify colonization, slavery, segregation, exclusion, and the consolidation of power in the name of God and country.

But the Gospel calls us somewhere deeper and wider: toward humility instead of domination, toward love of neighbor instead of fear, and toward a faith rooted not in nationalism or political control, but in the liberating way of Jesus.

Grateful for spaces that help us think critically, pray faithfully, and imagine a more just and compassionate future together.

Three of our four confirmands—we all take different paths to arrive where we do—and it was deeply powerful to witness their excitement as they stepped into this moment. Catherine of Siena once said, “Be who you are meant to be, and you will set the world on fire.” That is my honest prayer for each of us: that we would have the courage to claim our truest selves, to trust our own voice, and to let that authenticity ripple outward in ways that change the world. In the end, very little matters more than that.

A Blessing for the Building

May the God who meets you in the unguarded moments—
in the questions you did not choose,
in the ache of uncertainty,
in the places where your heart feels stirred and unsettled—
draw near to you with a presence that does not leave.
May you come to trust, slowly and deeply,
that you are not alone—
not in your grief,
not in your becoming,
not even in your doubt.
May Christ, the living stone,
hold all that feels fragmented in you
and gather it into something living—
not wasted, not discarded,
but shaped into a dwelling place of grace.
May you find yourself built into a people—
held in community,
woven together in ways you cannot always see,
a place where God’s life takes root and grows.
And as you are held, may you also be sent—
sent to embody love where there is division,
justice where there is harm,
mercy where there is suffering,
and hope where the world has forgotten how to hope.
May your life bear witness, in ways both quiet and bold,
that darkness does not have the final word.
And may you walk in the Way—not alone—
but with Christ, and with one another,
as participants in the healing of the world.
Amen.

A Blessing for Our Sheep-ish Souls

May you learn the sound of the voice that calls you by name—
not the voice that drives, shames, or scatters,
but the One that gathers you in tenderness and truth.

May you have the courage to turn away
from every thief of your life—
every lie that tells you you are too much or not enough,
every gate that was never meant to hold you.

May you recognize the One who comes
not to steal or destroy,
but to lead you into wide, open spaces,
into a life that is full, textured, and real—
a life where your breath deepens
and your shoulders remember how to soften.

May you trust the slow work of following—
step by step, not needing to see the whole path,
only the next right place where love is leading.

And when the world feels crowded with noise,
may you know this:
you are not forgotten.
You are known.
You are called.
You are led toward life.

May you walk through every gate that leads to freedom,
and may you become, for others,
a voice that does not coerce but invites—
steady, grounded, and alive with care.

And may you find, again and again,
that the place of belonging is wider than you imagined,
and that life—abundant life—
is already opening toward you.

Amen.
