Franciscans in the Community

On most Thursdays, on the corner of Mission and 16th Street, Ambrose participates and serves coffee at Open Cathedral, which is part of San Francisco's night ministry.

Open Cathedral seeks to provide spiritual care to a multi faith community and in particular to San Francisco's unhoused population. They meet people where they are and offer the gift of undivided attention and loving presence.

Franciscans in the Community

Desmond has been the Steward of a ‘Little Free Library’ in front of our house near Dolores Park for four years now. The library is in an excellent location and typically gets between three and thirty visitors opening the door each day (we had a counter for a while). People donate or collect books as they wish, and from time to time it creates an opportunity for conversation with neighbors or passersby.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Brother Robert Hugh. Robert died peacefully last evening, August 11, in our friary in San Francisco, California, at the age of 97.

Robert was ordained a deacon in the Church of England in 1954 and after being ordained a priest in 1955, he spent 10 years in parishes around England. He joined SSF in1964 and often reminded us that he came to the US in 1967 for a “short-term exchange visit of a year or so!’”

Robert served as Novice Guardian and Minister Provincial, and in a teaching and retreat ministry that took him to all 50 states as well as Australia, New Zealand, the West Indies, and England.
