St. Francis Represented at the AANHPI Retreat in Seattle From April 15–17,

Bevely Popek attended the 2026 Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Episcopal Leadership Retreat in Seattle, hosted by the Diocese of Olympia and the Asiamerica Ministries Network. This year’s theme, “Let It Not Happen Again: Honoring AANHPI Faith, Memory, and Resilience,” brought together over 70 Episcopal clergy and lay leaders to explore AANHPI history, worship together, and turn collective stories into advocacy for migrant communities.

The retreat featured visits to historically and culturally significant sites:

-St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, formed in 1908 as the Japanese Mission and temporarily closed for three years beginning in 1942 during the incarceration of Japanese Americans in WWII.
-Luke Wing Museum in Seattle’s Chinatown–International District, celebrating Asian Pacific Amb erican culture and honoring Seattle’s first Asian American city council member elected in 1962.
-Chinese Reconciliation Park in Tacoma, a reflective waterfront space to honor the past, celebrate diversity, and inspire reconciliation.
-Northwest I.C.E. Detention Center, where attendees prayed for detainees and hung tsurus (Japanese origami cranes) which symbolize peace and healing.
-Christ Episcopal Church, for a prayer vigil in solidarity with immigrants.
-Japanese American Exclusion Memorial on Bainbridge Island, followed by a closing Eucharist at Grace Episcopal Church.

St. Francis’ Church is answering a call to stand in solidarity with detained immigrants through a simple but powerful act: folding origami cranes.

Thank you to everyone who has already participated—we’ve created 50 cranes so far! These cranes will journey to the Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Episcopal Leadership Retreat in Seattle (April 15–17) as a visible sign of prayer, peace, and support for those in detention.

There’s still time to join this effort. If you’d like to make cranes by April 12, they can be included in what I bring to the retreat. Please connect with Beverly Popek if you’d like to participate.

This invitation comes from The Episcopal Church’s Asiamerica Ministries, which is encouraging Episcopalians across the country to create origami cranes as symbols of hope, compassion, and solidarity with immigrants in detention. To learn more, you can read the full article here:

🌟 **Diocesan Youth Ministry Outreach Project & Lunch at St. Francis** 🌟

On November 8, 2026, St. Francis Church spearheaded an outreach project at the San Francisco Zoo, joining youth, families, and friends from churches throughout the California Diocese! After completing our service work, we had a great time enjoying the zoo together.

Afterwards, we gathered back at St. Francis for a delicious lunch, generously sponsored by the diocese. A huge thank you to Patrick Popek, Pat Ho-A-Yun, Sally Oh, Heather Manowski, and Ana Maria Sanchez for all their hard work in setting up, cooking, and cleaning up. 🙌

We also want to extend our gratitude to Caren Miles, the diocese's Associate for Formation, for her support and sponsorship of the lunch. It was a wonderful day of service, fellowship, and fun! 💖🍽️
