First Mennonite Church of San Francisco

First Mennonite Church of San Francisco FMCSF is a welcoming, worshipping, Anabaptist community that practices peace and justice, serves others, and joyfully walks in the way of Jesus.

First Mennonite Church of San Francisco is an Anabaptist community committed to joyfully walking in the way of Jesus in community with each other. For us that means being a welcoming, worshipping community; practicing peace and justice; and living a life of service to others. We also like to eat good food and laugh a lot - and figure that's part of following Jesus, too.

"Rohr says that if God creates in God's own image, there must be a family resemblance between the Trinity and everything else. So this constant give and take we see within creation and the cosmos, this constant flow, this constant connectedness, this isn’t a metaphor for God, this is the shape of what is. This is reality." Trinity Sunday Matthew 28:16-20 Jesus and his disciples were sitting around, and he asked them, as he liked to do: “Whom do people say that I am?” And his disciples answered, “Some say you are John the Baptist returned from the dead; others say Elijah or other of the old prophets.” And Jesus...

"Last week I talked about how we can learn about the Creator from looking at creation. And I think we can also learn about the Creator's economy by looking at creation. It’s simple: The grass grows without being asked. The water runs without being rationed. The sun shines on everyone, just and unjust, human and more than human. The early church was attempting to become, in human community, what the earth already is — a system where abundance flows to everyone rather than accumulating in a few hands." See more:

Acts 2:42-47  Last week we wandered together inside Psalm 23. We ate the green grass. We walked through the dark valley. We felt the protection of the Good Shepherd. And we held the tension the psalm itself holds — between abundance and suffering. I want to stay inside that tension today, because...

"This is not a cosmos designed for human comfort. It is something more extravagant: a commitment to life at every scale, across all time—a commitment that does not exempt any of us from suffering, but holds that suffering within a larger frame." See more:

Earth Day Sermon — Psalm 23 Our Scripture today is Bobby McFerrin’s version of “The 23rd Psalm.” This setting was written by Bobby in honor of his mother, so he refers to God as she. Dave Worm — who will be wish us for worship two weeks from now with Ann Speyer — is singing...

"I think we are Mary at this present time of ecological, political, social and (soon to be) economic crisis. We are standing in the garden, in the dark, weeping over what has been lost, in shock at the loss, in despair — and we are not yet able to recognize the new life that is also present, right here, right beside us." Easter Sunday John 20: 1, 11-15 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. She stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb, and she...

As we near the end of our congregation’s gala 50th anniversary year, pastoral staff reflect on the “state of the congregation” as we enter our 51st year. Psalm 46 God is our refuge and strength,     a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,....

"Prayer can be about coming into the presence of God, finding the calm center, and it is also about holy, shameless desiring. A holy, shameless desire that cries out for peace, for an end to stupid wars, for an end to the starvation of the children of Gaza. A holy, shameless desire that pleads that God would do right by our loved ones, protect them from pain and sorrow. A holy, shameless desire that demands that God give us what we need to be whole." The late Biblical scholar and theologian Marcus Borg said that when someone told him they didn’t believe in God, he would ask, “Tell me about the God you don’t believe in.” Often, it was a God Borg didn’t believe in himself! That quote inspires this Sunday’s service. We invited two folks from our church, Conrad Liiechty and Matt O’Brien, to reflect on the topic: “Tell me about the God you don’t believe in, and the God you do believe in..."

"This story of separation is killing us. It is killing us. This story makes thoughts and actions that could bring us back into right relationship with each other and nature and God unthinkable. But there is another story. There’s always been another story, a story that has existed since the beginning of time." See more...
