This Saturday! The Face of Enlightenment: Bringing Thangkas onto Your Path
with Artist Greg Smith

Saturday, January 6th: 10 AM - 12 PM
https://norcal.shambhala.org/program-details/?id=682828

What is the face of enlightenment? No face at all? Maybe. But if we pose the question to a Tibetan Buddhist the answer may be surprising. The face of enlightenment seems to have every imaginable expression — peaceful, passionate, wrathful. It seems any expression can hold some aspect of this message.

We will examine the place of art and imagination for those who have an interest in Buddhist practice and iconography. We’ll start with the inspiration to enter the path, and the expansion into a greater intention with bodhicitta, up to the profound inclusive quick path of Vajrayana. We will also try some guided meditation using visualized imagery.

Please join us for this public two-hour, online Saturday program with thangka artist, Greg Smith. The program is open to all and will consist of a presentation and teachings followed by time for questions and discussion.

A recording of the call will be made available for those who are unable to attend live.

This three-hour workshop explores the experiential realization of shunyata, or emptiness as understood on the Mahayana path of Buddhism. Shunyata means empty of ego, and yet, ego offers us a path of realization. The paradoxical topic is explored with humor and compassionate exchange to embrace the inevitable truth of our natural openness and celebrate that.
Please come for a morning of guided meditation and experiential exploration embracing our natural openness and vulnerable hearts.

Melissa Moore is senior teacher in the Shambhala Tradition and co-founder of Karuna Training, a training certification in Contemplative Psychology. Melissa has been teaching Buddhism, Shambhala, and Karuna Training worldwide since 1995. She has a MA in Contemplative Psychotherapy and a Ph.D. in Psychological Anthropology. She currently lives in Denver and is the steward of Karuna Training.

The Absolute in Bite-Size (According to the Lojong Teachings)
with Lodro Sangpo
Six Saturdays, January 30th through March 27th from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM

In this series of six classes we will be studying the Absolute Bodhichitta Slogans from the Lojong teachings. These slogans help to set the tone for the entire path of Buddhist teachings and to give us a sense of how deep our insights can go if we continue to practice.

Meditation in Everyday Life: A Five-Week Course
Five Tuesday Evenings January 12th—February 9th
From 6:30 to 8:30 PM

With simple instructions and support, mindfulness meditation practice can become part of your life, bringing greater stability, strength, and clarity.

While meditation has many benefits, establishing a consistent personal practice can be extremely challenging for both new and experienced meditators alike.

This five-week Mindfulness Meditation program is designed to help new meditators develop a regular practice and bring the benefits of mindfulness meditation to their daily lives. As we begin to practice on a regular basis, we learn to relax and simply be with whatever is going on in our lives. Over time, this meditation helps us to cultivate courage, humor, and stability in the face of daily complexities of jobs, relationships, and all aspects of daily life.

We often talk about the importance of being in the moment both in meditation and in post-meditation, or in our daily life. But when doing so, what do we really mean by being in the moment, or being, or even, the moment?

Further, why would that be helpful or important? Why would it be helpful to spend some daily time on cultivating momentariness in meditation, considering that there are seemingly so many other important things to do and to take care of?

In his talk, Lodrö Sangpo will discuss why, in general, momentariness is one of the fundamental principles of Buddhist meditation and philosophy and outlook on life. He will do this by specifically focusing on Trungpa Rinpoche's original meditation instruction on shamatha-vipashyana (or mindfulness-awareness) which forms a solid basis for all the so-called later practices.
